The P DI IGNITION MANAGEMENT OFC Department of the P EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS & RESPONSE Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 management vacancy available. JOB FUNCTION: Serves as the lead investigator for fire incidents across Hawaiian Electric's service territories. Conducts comprehensive ground and aerial field analyses to determine and understand the origin and cause of fires. Responsible for the oversight of activities for compliance and wildfire mitigation to prevent ignition events. Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to assess the root cause of ignitions and determine the company's attributability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Engineering, Criminal Justice, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of fire investigation techniques and methods.
  • Working knowledge of relevant laws, regulations and codes.
  • Proficiency in computer systems and software (e.g., spreadsheets, word processing).
  • Familiarity with safety manuals, accident prevention protocols, and relevant regulations.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in fire investigation and prevention, or utility operations.
  • Ability to work in hazardous environments.
  • Strong legal and regulatory knowledge.
  • Adaptability in high-pressure and dynamic environments.
  • Discretion and professionalism in handling sensitive issues.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong analytical skills to research and compile data into detailed, actionable reports.
  • Excellent written, oral and presentation skills in order to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization, which often includes dealing with sensitive, difficult or confrontational issues, and conducting interviews.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a variety of individuals at all levels within and outside the company using tact, courtesy and discretion.
  • Must be able and willing to travel to service territories to conduct extended wildland fire investigations in remote areas across the state. Must be able and willing to identify, collect, and store difficult to manage evidence from areas with limited accessibility.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license. Must meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives.
  • Extensive experience (8+) of related experience, preferably in conducting fire investigations or related experience in the utility or fire industry.
  • One year of progressively responsible experience in fire-prevention activities including conducting fire inspections, fire prevention or life safety plan checks and related functions; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful completion of Wildland Fire Origin & Cause Investigation Determination (FI-210) upon hire, preferred.
  • Certified Fire Investigator (CFI) or Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI) upon hire, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Site Investigations
  • Collects, documents, and preserves physical evidence to determine ignition sources and company involvement.
  • Coordinates with first responders and field personnel to gather time-sensitive information for ethical business assessments.
  • Conducts confidential investigations in compliance with company policies, codes of conduct, and applicable regulations.
  • Applies fire investigation methodologies, civil investigation techniques, and legal procedures.
  • Interviews witnesses, property owners, engineers, and emergency personnel.
  • Represents the company during fire and emergency incidents.
  • Acts as the Ignition Management Manager when required.
  • Reporting and Documentation
  • Researches, analyzes, and compiles data to produce detailed reports on fire investigations and mitigation actions.
  • Prepares comprehensive documentation to identify systemic issues contributing to ignition events.
  • Supports analysis of utility equipment failure modes for operational and planning decisions.
  • Training & Development
  • Develops and delivers fire safety education and disaster preparedness programs.
  • Creates informational materials and conducts presentations for schools, community groups, and public events.
  • Participates in professional development and training activities related to fire science and prevention.
  • Emergency Response
  • Provides rotational on-call support, to include 24/7 availability to respond to serious incidents across service territories.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
