Since this position is temporary, if open positions are available, Interns may be offered full-time permanent employment with the City of Franklin upon the end of their internship. No permanent employment is guaranteed through this internship. Fire Academy scores will be referenced when selecting which interns are offered permanent employment, if any. Take our written test online! Applicants will take the FIREFIGHTER exam administered electronically by the National Testing Network (NTN). The final day to take the test will be April 17th, 2026, at 5:00 PM CT to be considered for the upcoming testing period. Step 1: Fully complete the City of Franklin application. Attach all relevant documents, including any firefighter training/certification that you have received. Step 2: Go to the NTN website, login/register, Find Jobs, search for Franklin's posting, select our job, follow the instructions, and complete our written exam! Practice testing for the written exam can be found at this link: Frontline National Practice Test Once the testing period has closed, the candidates (100) with the highest scores will receive an email invitation with more details to attend our testing days, which will start the final week of April. Testing Days The testing days for this job opening will be held on five separate dates. Candidates will be invited to one or two of the five available dates, but days will be assigned without preference, please make sure you have availability through these days. Candidates will be notified of which day(s) they'll be required to show for testing on April 20th, 2026. Only candidates who received test day instructions will be permitted to test. Test Date 1: April 29th, 2026 Test Date 2: April 30th, 2026 Test Date 3: May 1st, 2026 Test Date 4: May 4th, 2026 Test Date 5: May 5th, 2026 Testing consists of the physical ability test and panel interview with Fire Department personnel. Completes regular training sessions and performs some maintenance work on the fire station and vehicles as required. Reports to the Captain and/or Lieutenant. Essential Job Duties A. Performs fire control duties Responds to fire, rescue, hazardous materials emergencies, and other emergencies assigned to company. Lays and connects hose lines, nozzles, and other related appliances, and turns water on and off as necessary; carries, puts up, and climbs ladders and operates rescue equipment as necessary. Performs salvage work at fire and emergency scenes using salvage covers, vacuums, mops, and squeegees. Performs ventilation by making openings in buildings, using exhaust fans or fog streams, power tools, hand saws, and axes. Enters burning or contaminated buildings, structures, and other areas to fight fires and/or perform rescues while wearing required protective clothing and safety equipment. Administers first aid to the sick injured. Performs tactical surveys of commercial structures in assigned district. B. Attends training to maintain and learn new knowledge and skills Attends regular training sessions to practice existing procedures and to learn and practice new firefighting and rescue methods . C. Performs routine preparatory work to maintain readiness to respond to emergencies Assists in cleaning personal and station firefighting equipment upon return to the station after an emergency call or a practice drill. Cleans and maintains areas of the fire station used by Department personnel as scheduled. Other Job Duties Performs other job duties as assigned, including: Operates a pressure pump and elevating devices as assigned. Assists with the fire prevention programs. Maintains fire hydrants and completes any necessary paperwork. Performs other related duties as required. Primary Job Challenges Primary challenges of this position include maintaining good judgment under high stress scenarios and maintaining readiness to respond 24/7 to emergencies. Equipment Operated Safety equipment (e.g., oxygen supply - SCBA), hand tools (e.g., axes and entry tools), and power tools (e.g., saws and vehicle extraction tools) Minimum Requirements Eligibility Requirements: Fire Intern: Must be 18 years old by April 29th, 2026 Must be a high school graduate of class of 2025 or 2026. Possess a valid driver's license Education and Experience: Must be 18 years old to apply. The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through an Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school; or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
