About The Position

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Conduct regular fire safety inspections of school district buildings, equipment, and grounds to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal fire codes. Identify and document fire hazards, recommend corrective actions, and follow up to ensure compliance. Inspect fire alarms, sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting, and other fire protection systems. Investigate fire incidents and work with local fire authorities to determine causes and preventive measures. Develop and implement fire safety policies, evacuation plans, and emergency response procedures. Provide fire prevention and safety training to staff, students, and administrators. Maintain records of inspections, violations, corrective actions, and fire safety equipment testing. Coordinate and participate in fire drills and emergency preparedness exercises. Stay updated on changes to fire codes, safety regulations, and best practices. Assist with fire safety aspects of building renovations, plan review and new construction projects. Serve as a liaison between the school district and fire departments, emergency services, and regulatory agencies. Perform other job-related duties as assigned. Revised: 02/28/2025

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of professional, full-time experience in fire safety, inspections, and/or plan review.
  • Valid Florida Fire Inspector 1 Certificate.
  • Must maintain the minimum requirements of the State of Florida, as specified in F.S. 633.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, statues, regulations, codes, and standards related to the area of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of fire codes, safety regulations, and fire prevention techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to operate personal computers with proficiency and learn new applications and systems.
  • Ability to gather data, maintain records, and prepare reports and other written materials.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with a varied group of staff, administration, students, and the community.
  • Ability to think critically and make clear, well-reasoned and timely decisions.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights and weekends as necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates degree from an accredited institution in Fire Science, Public Safety or a closely related field.
  • Five years of professional, full-time experience in fire safety, inspections, and plan review.
  • Valid Florida Fire Inspector 2 Certification.
  • Fire Investigator Certification I.
  • Relevant work experience or education may be substituted to satisfy required qualifications.
