About The Position

The Fire Inspector performs inspections of public, commercial, industrial, and other buildings and premises to ensure compliance with current adopted fire and safety codes and respectfully requests actions that will ensure compliance. Inspector also ensures compliance with the City’s Zoning Codes. Coordinates with the other Departments to ensure that buildings, structures, and facilities conform to laws affecting zoning, health, safety, and property laws. The City of Bella Vista offers an excellent benefits package effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment. Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Inspects new and existing places of public assembly, auditoriums, theaters, business, apartments, condominiums and other institutions for existing and potential fire hazards and respectfully requests correction of dangerous conditions. Evaluates fire protection systems, alarms, sprinklers, extinguishers, and means of egress. Plans for compliance with the standard fire codes making suggestions to property owners to prevent fires. Enforces laws and City ordinances relating to safety, health, zoning, signage, building and energy codes. Interacts with other City personnel and Departments to enforce City ordinances and codes where areas of overlap exist. Prepares and maintains records on required inspections in sufficient detail to support action taken including court testimony, if necessary. Communicates code deficiencies to parties and coordinates corrections and changes needed to remedy deficiencies. Investigates code violations identified through patrolling, resident complaints, and referrals from other City personnel. Initiates and documents appropriate actions to ensure dwellings, premises, and vacant lots found in violation are repaired, condemned, razed, or cleaned in compliance with City codes and ordinances. Prepares and delivers violation notices to residents in accordance with Departmental procedures to obtain compliance with codes and ordinances

Requirements

  • Ability to work independently and to make sound judgments and decisions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with property owners, employees and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to present information and respond to questions in a professional manner.
  • Ability to enforce rules and regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to read and understand blue prints, maps, legal descriptions, technical drawings, codes and specifications.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Office, Outlook, and database applications maintained by the City.
  • Basic knowledge of Geographic Information System (GIS) applications.
  • Completion of a high school diploma or general equivalency degree (GED).
  • One (1) year or more prior experience as a Fire Inspector preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of fire safety codes and of effective inspection methods and techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of the fire hazards involved in various types of construction and in the storage of inflammables and explosives.
  • Knowledge of procedures to be followed in the investigation of arson or a similar crime.
  • Possess or ability to obtain Fire Inspector certification.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass City required background screen and drug test.

  • Prior construction or building inspection experience a plus.
