About The Position

THIS POSITION WITH THE FIRE MARSHAL'S OFFICE UNDER COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IS 19.5 HOURS PER WEEK WITH A VARYING SCHEDULE. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision of the Fire Marshal, incumbent performs fire code inspections and plan reviews, assuring compliance with the Connecticut Fire Safety Code, the Connecticut Fire Prevention Code and referenced standards. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Performs fire code inspections of buildings and public establishments and prepares related reports. Reviews plans and specifications to inform inspections, review abatement actions, and to assure fire safety code compliance for building permits. Issues abatement orders where violations are found or where regulations concerning flammable and combustible liquids, flammable gases, hazardous materials, explosives, fireworks and fuel emergencies apply; conducts follow up inspections. Maintains current knowledge of fire safety codes and standards. Provides code consultation to property owners, developers, contractors, and the public. Responds in a timely manner to complaints. Contributes to a respectful and safe work environment by fostering a culture of positive communication, ethical behavior, and emphasis on providing exceptional service to internal and external customers. OTHER DUTIES: Performs other duties as required. Requirements

  • Knowledge of State statutes and adopted codes, local ordinances and standards which pertain to fire safety inspections
  • Principles and practices of fire code inspection and enforcement
  • State traffic laws
  • Ability to Read safety plans and construction plans
  • Read, interpret and apply fire code
  • Interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form
  • Communicate findings in writing, accurately, clearly and concisely
  • Maintain records and accumulate statistical and chronological data
  • Enforce fire code in a firm, fair and courteous manner, including the ability to explain requirements
  • Skilled in Interpersonal communication to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Providing a high level of customer service while executing regulatory duties
  • Physical exertion such as walking over rough or difficult terrain; recurring standing, stooping, kneeling, twisting, climbing and maneuvering through tight and narrow passages; occasional lifting of moderately heavy items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Gross motor mobility as in positioning ladders, and fine motor dexterity as in manipulating small parts,
  • Subject to extreme weather conditions such as heat, humidity, wet and cold;
  • Ability to See objects closely as in reading, and at a distance as in driving a vehicle
  • Hear normal sounds with background noise, distinguish voice patterns and communicate through speech
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of experience in fire prevention or a related field, which can include a combination of training and work experience.
  • Certification by the Office of State Fire Marshal as a Fire Code Inspector
  • Driver’s License
