About The Position

St. Johns County Fire Rescue is seeking a Fire Safety Inspector Supervisor for our well-established Fire Prevention Division whose headquarters are located in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida. The St. Johns County Fire Prevention Division is responsible for conducting periodic fire safety inspections on more than 14,000 commercial occupancies and conducting inspections on all new commercial construction projects including fire alarms, fire sprinklers, underground fire mains, and a variety of other fire related permits. Employees work in a team-oriented environment in a variety of situations with two primary goals in mind: to provide a fire safe environment for our citizens and visitors and to provide quality customer service while working toward fire code compliance. The newly selected Fire Safety Inspector Supervisor will be responsible for planning and supervision of fire inspections on existing commercial occupancies including but not limited to licensed facilities, mercantile, multi-family residential, and assemblies. This work is often completed by assignment without direct supervision.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in a related course of study to the occupational field, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, certification, and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities to thoroughly understand and perform the major duties of the position.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, associated with at least one year of experience or service.
  • Fire Inspector 2 certification preferred or obtain certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth in Florida Statue #633, Division of State Fire Marshal Administrative Rules 69A-37.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills to serve others.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
  • Must be able to operate a computer.

Responsibilities

  • Directs the Inspections of commercial and multi-family residential buildings for fire code compliance.
  • Inspects fire protection systems for fire code compliance.
  • Consults with Contractors concerning fire code requirements.
  • Maintains inspection files and records.
  • Types various correspondence and reports.
  • Educates facility owners, managers, and staff on fire code requirements and options to comply.
  • Answers questions regarding fire codes and fire prevention.
  • Conducts public education / fire prevention programs.
  • Initiates enforcement actions, including notices of violations and citations, in accordance with department policies.
