About The Position

The City of Blaine is seeking an experienced and motivated Fire Inspector with strong plan review experience to join our Community Standards Division. This position is responsible for performing technical inspections and reviewing building and fire protection plans to ensure compliance with the Minnesota State Fire Code, building codes, and local ordinances. In addition, this role supplements the fire department by responding to emergency incidents. The ideal candidate will be skilled in plan review for new construction and tenant improvements, possess excellent communication skills, and be dedicated to providing outstanding public service. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Four (4) years of experience in fire inspection, plan review, code enforcement, or related field.
  • Certification as Fire Inspector II by the Minnesota Fire Service Certification Board.
  • Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
  • Current MN Board of Fire Fighter Training and Education (MBFTE) Fire Fighter License.
  • Valid Minnesota driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Working knowledge of the Minnesota State Fire Code, building construction, and fire protection systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact effectively with the public, contractors, and other staff.
  • Experience working in a municipal fire prevention or code enforcement setting.
  • Ability to interpret and apply fire and building codes, standards, and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of fire protection systems, building construction, and hazardous materials.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to customer service.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Building Inspection, Construction Management, or related field.
  • Certification as a Plans Examiner by the Minnesota Fire Service Certification Board.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing complex commercial or multi-family project plans.
  • Experience using Bluebeam or similar digital plan review tools.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct fire and life safety inspections of new and existing buildings for compliance with applicable fire and building codes.
  • Review construction and fire protection system plans, including fire alarm, sprinkler, and chemical suppression systems.
  • Collaborate with Building Inspections, Planning, and Engineering departments to support safe development and occupancy.
  • Identify code violations and issue correction notices; follow up to ensure compliance.
  • Investigate fire hazards, complaints, and code violations.
  • Maintain accurate inspection, plan review, and enforcement records.
  • Provide technical guidance to contractors, architects, and engineers regarding fire code requirements.
