About The Position

The Fire Engine Operator (FEO) is responsible for the operation of the fire engine module in responding to wildland fires and all-hazard incidents. This position serves as a full assistant to the supervisor of a Fire Engine Module, particularly in areas with the complexities of wildland-urban interface. The FEO makes initial evaluations of fire situations, determines suppression methods, and requests additional assistance as necessary. In the absence of the Senior Fire Engine Operator (SFEO), the FEO may serve as the initial attack Incident Commander on wildland fires and wildland urban interface/intermix situations. The role also involves performing pre-suppression duties, directing project work in support of ecosystem management, and analyzing tactics and strategies employed on incidents.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • This is a drug testing designated position; subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
  • Must pass the Work Capacity Test for certain Interagency Fire Program Management or Fire Program Management positions.
  • Willing to live/work in remote locations.
  • Under age 37 or eligible for a waiver if older.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in fire suppression and fireline construction.
  • Knowledge of prescribed fire management and developing burn plans.
  • Experience in evaluating initial fire situations and determining suppression methods.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the fire engine module in response to wildland fires and all-hazard incidents.
  • Assist the supervisor of a Fire Engine Module in complex wildland-urban interface areas.
  • Evaluate fire situations and determine suppression methods and crew deployment.
  • Request additional assistance as necessary.
  • Serve as initial attack Incident Commander in the absence of SFEO.
  • Perform pre-suppression duties using analytical methods for fire management plans.
  • Direct project work in support of ecosystem management.
  • Identify and analyze tactics and strategies on incidents.
  • Determine probable causes of fire and preserve evidence of human-caused fires.
