About The Position

The purpose of this position is Wildland fire suppression as a skilled firefighter on an engine or hand crew. Other wildland fire duties may involve fire prevention, patrol, detection, or prescribed burning. The incumbent will also be involved with the maintenance and repair of firefighting tools, equipment, and facilities, and will also receive firefighting training. This is an arduous position and subject to medical screening and physical fitness testing.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have successfully completed basic fire training S-190, S-130, IC-700 and ICS-100.
  • Must have successfully completed S-131 and S-290.
  • Must have successfully completed S-212 power saws and S-211 basic pumps.
  • Must take and pass a wildland fire physical and wildland arduous pack test.
  • Must have firefighting leather boots.
  • Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred valid Washington State Driver's license and be able to obtain a Yakama Nation drivers permit, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as an assistant on a wildland fire engine working as a trainee engine operator.
  • If a valid Washington State driver's license and Yakama Nation Tribal driving permit is valid, incumbent may drive engine or operate the pump and making hose lays under the direction of the engine boss.
  • Upon qualification may serve as a helitack crewmember, Hand Crew crewmember, Heavy Equipment boss, campground crewmember or Sawyer.
  • Perform basic fire line activities such as lone construction, hose layout, operation of pumps and accessories.
  • Lopping and scattering of fuels using hand tools, holding, patrolling, monitoring, and mop up operations.
  • Moves dirt, chops brush, small trees, etc. to construct fire line.
  • Incumbent is responsible for observing the rules of firefighting safety and applies practices and techniques to minimize resource damage.
  • Participates in fire and safety training in the techniques, practices, and methods of fire suppression and in the safe, efficient operation and use of tools, equipment and vehicles used in fire line activities, with emphasis on those used in the particular function to which assigned.
  • Must participate in crew proficiency checks, drills, and safety sessions and fire critiques.
  • Ensures own and others welfare and safety in all aspects of the assignments.
