About The Position

Centerra seeks a strategic and dynamic Fire Chief with a safety-focused mindset to lead its dedicated fire department at Radford Army Ammunition Plant, Radford Virginia. This Director-level position will provide strong, decisive leadership to a team of fire service professionals, ensuring operational excellence and readiness in all emergency response functions. Under the direction of the Centerra Fire & Emergency Services Director, manages and directs the plant’s fire suppression programs and assists with related emergency operations in the pursuit of the protection of life and property.

  • Demonstrates a deep understanding of regulatory compliance and risk management, maintaining vigilant oversight of all Emergency response safety.
  • Prioritizes the safety and well-being of Radford Army Ammunition Plant Staff, and visitors in every aspect of department operations.
  • Build and maintains strong automatic and mutual aid and automatic response partnerships across the region to ensure seamless emergency collaboration.
  • Thinks beyond traditional fire service boundaries and aligns leadership strategies with the operational structure and priorities of an Army Ammunition Plant.
  • Understands and embraces that the Radford Army Ammunition Plant is a Military/Corporate environment—not a municipal one—and brings the right set of leadership and management skills to succeed in that context.
  • Recognizes that Radford Army Ammunition Plant is a complex, high-stakes operational environment requiring specialized, nontraditional experience; and facilitates morale-building and healing within the department by addressing internal challenges with empathy, consistency, and team-centered leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Advises on and establishes policies and procedures for Fire and EMS.
  • Plans and implements Fire and EMS programs for the plant in order to better carry out policies and goals including those set forth in the various Army regulations, ordinances, and the State fire code.
  • Reviews departmental performance and effectiveness.
  • Reviews and recommends the implementation of new and innovative technology.
  • Supervises and coordinates the preparation, presentation, and spending of an annual budget for the Fire and EMS Department.
  • Plans for and reviews specifications for new or replacement equipment.
  • Responds to alarms, administers initial emergency (care or response and or service) when necessary and directs activities at the scene of emergencies as required.
  • Responsible for the inspection of buildings and other properties for fire hazards and enforces local fire prevention ordinances as well as the State fire code.
  • Assist with training personnel in all aspects of the job.
  • Maintains departmental discipline and the conduct and general behavior of assigned personnel.
  • Prepares and submits monthly reports to the Army regarding department activities and prepares a variety of other reports as appropriate.
  • Plans departmental operations with respect to equipment, apparatus, and personnel and further supervises the implementation of such plans in accordance with established policies.
  • Assigns personnel and equipment to such duties and uses as the service requires.
  • Ensures all training is in compliance with DOD and Army regulations.
  • Work is performed primarily in an office, vehicle, outdoor settings, in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes, during day and night shifts.
  • Work is performed in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Individual may be exposed to hearing alarms and hazards associated with fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistance, including smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents and oils.
  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in office settings and loud at an emergency scene.
  • Perform other related work as required.
