About The Position

The Fire Captain provides asset protection for client facilities, property, and right of way while delivering primary fire suppression, rescue, and medical emergency response services. This role leads the DUS Fire Team at the Valdez Marine Terminal (VMT), ensuring emergency readiness through personnel supervision, training, equipment maintenance, inspections, and pre emergency planning. The Fire Captain manages routine and emergency operations in compliance with all DUS and client safety guidelines, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. This is a rotational position located in Valdez, Alaska working a two week on / two week off schedule. Transportation and housing is NOT provided. Employees go to their own place of residence at the end of each shift.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Five (5) years of experience in a leadership role within a fire service
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate, to the client’s satisfaction, all fire vehicles and specialized apparatus
  • State of Alaska Fire Service Instructor 1 certification
  • State of Alaska Portable Fire Extinguisher Technician 1 certification
  • State of Alaska Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT) certification or higher state certification
  • Able to proficiently speak, read, understand and write English
  • As a condition of employment, must be able to successfully complete a post-offer criminal background investigation, drug screen, and a physical meeting NFPA Standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of work history in a harsh and/or remote location
  • Two (2) years of work history at an oil or gas related facility
  • Three (3) years of experience in a leadership/supervisory role
  • State of Alaska Fire Officer 1 certification
  • Rope rescue experience, including high-angle and confined space

Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership and command of fire, rescue, and emergency medical operations during routine and emergency incidents
  • Supervise, manage, and evaluate firefighting personnel; set performance expectations, enforce standards, and support professional development
  • Plan, schedule, and adjust staffing to meet operational and emergency readiness requirements
  • Direct and oversee training programs for firefighters, fire brigade members, rescue teams, and site employees and contractors
  • Ensure emergency response equipment, apparatus, facilities, and protective gear are properly maintained, inspected, and inventoried
  • Develop and maintain pre‑emergency plans and oversee preventative maintenance and compliance activities for fire protection systems
  • Serve as incident commander and make management‑level decisions during emergencies
  • Coordinate and liaise with client representatives, internal management, regulatory agencies, and local, state, and federal responders
  • Perform physically demanding and field‑based duties as required, including providing primary fire, rescue, and medical emergency response activities, operating equipment, shoveling snow, working at heights and in confined spaces, and supporting site readiness in extreme weather conditions
  • Maintain a high degree of physical capability and agility
  • Shall be examined and certified as medically and physically fit as required by the NFPA Standard on Industrial Fire Brigades 2000 Edition, Sections 2-5 and 2-5.3.
  • Physical fitness will be based on job-related physical performance requirements established by Alyeska’ Fire Manager and Corporate Medical Director.
  • The medical and physical fitness certifications will be repeated annually as per NFPA 600 Sections 2-5.2 and 2-5.3.3.
