About The Position

The Fire Captain performs routine and specialized duties to plan, direct and manage the operational functions of a Fire Station including emergency response, prevention, inspection, training and public relations to protect lives and property in the Town of Mount Pleasant. May assume duties of Battalion Chief in the event of temporary absence.

Requirements

  • Associate degree and five (5) years of fire service experience with a minimum of one (1) year in a supervisory capacity in a paid fire department at least 75% the size of the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Employees hired July 1, 2015 or thereafter, will be required to have an Associate’s degree to fill the position of Fire Captain.
  • Meet all special requirements as listed in the Engineer job description.
  • Completion of MPFD Captain Qualification Manual (If the Fire Chief elects to hire someone from the outside, they will be required to successfully complete the manual during their six (6) month probationary period).
  • Fire Officer I certification (IFSAC or equivalent).
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) training 300 and 400.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and manages subordinate personnel during emergency operations including the laying of hose, raising ladders, venting buildings, firefighting, salvage, administering first aid and rescuing persons at a fire or other emergency scenes.
  • Provides some command responsibility at emergency scenes when required.
  • Prepares detailed reports as necessary.
  • Oversees and participates in fire-related situations including driving and operating fire apparatus, pumps, equipment, entry, suppression and rescue.
  • Conducts on-going reviews of department apparatus and equipment; reviews operational techniques and practices; develops and implements department policies and procedures.
  • Corrects problems and reports discrepancies to Battalion Chief.
  • Oversees preparation and execution of operational plans for major events handled by the Department.
  • Assigns work schedules and specific assignments to subordinates to accomplish duties and responsibilities.
  • Conducts yearly performance appraisal of subordinates.
  • Oversees day-to-day non-emergency activities of subordinates including the solicitation of ideas and opinions from subordinates and assisting individuals to accomplish tasks.
  • Administers and participates in public fire education, public relations, and community service programs and subcommittees.
  • Assists with budget preparation as requested.
  • Provides mentoring and career development to subordinates.
  • Performs other related assigned duties.
