The city of Las Vegas invites applications for Fire Apparatus Mechanic II. This position performs skilled major and minor mechanical overhaul and repair of a variety of gasoline and diesel automotive vehicles including automobiles, fire trucks, rescue ambulances, fire engines, and other specialized vehicles; to perform a variety of technical tasks related to assigned area of responsibility. This is the full journey level class in the Fire Apparatus Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Apparatus Mechanic I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned and from the Fire Apparatus Mechanic III by not being assigned the most complex tasks and duties and not being expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

  • Diagnose mechanical problems in the various Fire Department automotive vehicles and related fire suppression equipment.
  • Perform major and minor overhaul and repair of fire engines.
  • Perform routine service, repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment including ladder trucks, service trucks, and emergency medical vehicles.
  • Work on both gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Perform maintenance and repair work on heavy-duty centrifugal pumps.
  • Assist in the training of fire fighting personnel in the operation, care and maintenance of engines, trucks and automobiles.
  • Assist in training lower level mechanic staff.
  • Assist in maintaining service and maintenance records of vehicles.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory records.
  • Test-drive, deliver, and retrieve vehicles which involve the driving of vehicles on public roadways.
  • Five years experience in the major and minor repair of light and heavy-duty automotive equipment, including electrical and electronic systems repair.
  • At least one year of heavy-duty diesel mechanical repair.
  • Two years working in the City of Las Vegas as a Fire Apparatus Mechanic I.
  • Equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Possession of a Nevada Class B Commercial Drivers License, as well as an 'N' endorsement (Tank Vehicle) within 6 months of date of hire.
  • Within six months of appointment, possession of the National Institute for Automotive Excellence (NIASE) certification in diesel engines.
  • Within eighteen months of appointment, possession of NIASE certification in electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of the operation and repair of fire department firefighting equipment and apparatus.
  • Knowledge of theory, care, operation and repair of diesel engines.
  • Knowledge of automatic and standard car and truck transmissions.
  • Knowledge of centrifugal pumps and their related plumbing.
  • Knowledge of automotive air conditioning, hydraulic and power and standard steering systems.
  • Knowledge of record keeping and basic inventory control.
  • Hiring Range: Step 1 $31.00 - Step 5 $39.35 Hourly (based on experience)
  • Salary Range: Step 1 $31.00 - Step 10 $48.91 Hourly
