About The Position

The city of Las Vegas invites applications for Fire Apparatus Mechanic. This position performs skilled major and minor mechanical overhaul and repair of a variety of gasoline and diesel automotive vehicles including automobiles, fire trucks, rescue ambulances, fire engines, and other specialized vehicles; to perform a variety of technical tasks related to assigned area of responsibility. This is the entry level class in the Fire Apparatus Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Apparatus Mechanic II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. This class may be used as a training class or the class may contain positions wherein employees perform routine tasks on a permanent basis and therefore remain at an entry level. This is the full journey level class in the Fire Apparatus Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Apparatus Mechanic I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned and from the Fire Apparatus Mechanic III by not being assigned the most complex tasks and duties and not being expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level, or when filled from the outside, candidates have prior experience. This is the advanced journey level class in the Fire Apparatus Mechanic series. This class is distinguished from the Fire Apparatus Mechanic II by the performance of the most complex and difficult types of tasks and duties, including leading, training and reviewing the work of lower level classes. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all work unit procedures.

Requirements

  • Four years experience in the service and repair of cars, trucks and automotive equipment, including some experience in diesel and electrical and electronic systems repair.
  • Equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Possession of a Nevada Class B Commercial Drivers License, as well as an 'N' endorsement (Tank Vehicle) within 6 months of date of hire, and maintenance thereafter.
  • Within six months of appointment, possession of the National Institute for Automotive Excellence (NIASE) certification in either engine repair or heavy-duty gasoline engines, and maintenance thereafter.
  • Within eighteen months of appointment, possession of NIASE certification in brakes, and maintenance thereafter.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose mechanical problems in the various Fire Department automotive vehicles and related fire suppression equipment.
  • Perform major and minor overhaul and repair of fire engines.
  • Perform routine service, repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment ladder trucks, service trucks and emergency medical vehicles.
  • Work on both gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Perform maintenance and repair work on heavy-duty centrifugal pumps.
  • Assist in the training of fire fighting personnel in the operation, care and maintenance of engines, trucks and automobiles.
  • Assist in training lower level mechanic staff.
  • Assist in maintaining service and maintenance records of vehicles.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory records.
  • Test-drive, deliver, and retrieve vehicles which involve the driving of vehicles on public roadways.

  • Hiring Range: Step 1 $28.23 - Step 5 $35.80 Hourly (based on experience)
  • Salary Range: Step 1 $28.23 - Step 10 $44.47 Hourly
