About The Position

The Fire and Gas Protection Engineer at BP's Whiting Refinery is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient execution of fire and gas engineering and maintenance support. This role involves coordinating resources, developing maintenance plans, and supporting refinery improvements to meet HSSE goals. The engineer will engage in preventative, predictive, and reactive maintenance, as well as equipment upgrades, while providing technical support across various teams.

Requirements

  • BS Degree in Engineering (Fire Protection Engineering preferred).
  • 5 years of refining or similar industry experience.
  • 3+ years of Fire Protection Engineer experience.
  • 5+ years in an end-user/owner role in the refining industry.
  • Proficiency in standard desktop software.
  • Knowledge of industry codes and regulatory standards (NEC, ISA, NFPA, API).
  • Experience with aspiration systems and PLC-based control systems.
  • Experience with fire and gas equipment design and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with Siemens and Honeywell fire and gas PLCs.
  • Technical knowledge of fire and gas system engineering calculations.

Nice To Haves

  • PE License.
  • Knowledge of cause-and-effect diagrams.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills for fire and gas alarm systems.

Responsibilities

  • Manage technical integrity of fire and gas systems.
  • Direct critical activities requiring instrument and control expertise.
  • Provide daily technical support to technicians and supervisors.
  • Support fire protection and life safety applications.
  • Guide priority and scope of equipment repairs.
  • Lead root-cause analysis for fire and gas incidents.
  • Analyze equipment monitoring data for reliability issues.
  • Generate and maintain key performance indicators for instrumentation.
  • Create preventative maintenance plans for fire and gas instrumentation.
  • Review engineering projects for compliance with standards.
  • Participate in safety evaluations and implement actions.
  • Complete engineering design for refinery improvement projects.
  • Develop and maintain fire and gas safety standards.
  • Manage reliability projects for fire and gas systems.
  • Prepare engineering datasheets and specifications.
  • Review supplier data and oversee acceptance testing.
  • Direct design engineering and construction contractors.
  • Maintain fire and gas specifications and diagrams.
