About The Position

The Financial Empowerment Case Manager (FECM) will be part of the newly established “Empowerment Hub” (United We Thrive Center) at the United Way of Rhode Island and will play a key role in supporting families toward financial stability and long-term success. The FECM will utilize a two-generation approach to coach parents and caregivers in advocating for their children’s success in school, while linking families to partner agencies that can address educational and family stability needs. This position combines case management, financial coaching, facilitation, and community outreach to empower families with the tools, resources, and confidence needed to thrive. The ideal candidate is compassionate, organized, and committed to promoting economic mobility through hands-on support and data-driven results.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • At least 2 years of experience in case management, financial coaching, or related direct service work.
  • Strong understanding of financial empowerment strategies and community resources.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Proficiency with case management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and supporting families from diverse backgrounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual in English & Spanish.
  • Certification in Financial Coaching or Counseling
  • Experience working with low- to moderate-income families or immigrant communities.

Responsibilities

  • Family Recruitment and Engagement Identify and recruit eligible families for program participation through outreach and referrals.
  • Conduct intake assessments to determine family eligibility, needs, and goals.
  • Build trusting, respectful relationships with families to foster long-term engagement.
  • Cultivate meaningful partnerships with schools and community stakeholders to expand referral networks that help families achieve stability, align with community needs, and strengthen the United Way of Rhode Island’s mission to ensure every family can thrive.
  • Work with the families to plan their moves, to avoid any disruption to the childs education.
  • Provide individualized financial coaching, including budgeting, credit building, debt reduction, and savings strategies.
  • Connect families to community resources that address basic needs such as housing, food, employment, and childcare.
  • Support families in developing and following action plans for financial stability and self-sufficiency.
  • Coach and empower families to advocate for their children’s educational success, while coordinating with partner agencies to address academic, social, and basic needs that strengthen the whole family’s stability.
  • Facilitate workshops and learning sessions focused on financial literacy, goal setting, and economic empowerment.
  • Encourage and guide families to identify their strengths and opportunities for growth.
  • Collaborate with partners to expand pathways for education, employment, and asset-building.
  • Maintain accurate and timely case notes, records, and outcome data using designated systems.
  • Track progress toward individual and program goals which includes an assessment every 90 days.
  • Prepare regular reports to demonstrate impact and outcomes to leadership and funders.
  • Work collaboratively across departments to ensure families receive comprehensive wraparound support.
  • Research and attend outreach events, community fairs, and partner meetings to represent the program.
  • Effectively communicate program impact, success stories, and emerging needs to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide regular updates to program leadership and contribute to continuous improvement efforts.
  • Develop and implement a personalized, individual JEDI growth plan to establish and track JEDI Competency baselines.
  • Participate in annual JEDI training.
  • Support UWRI JEDI initiatives (e.g., Equity Challenge) and participating/supporting agency groups (e.g., Heritage and Professionals, Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and Culture, Equity and Strengths Committee (CES).
  • Participate in community, state or national (e.g., United Way Worldwide) JEDI growth opportunities.
