About The Position

The Financial Counselor is responsible for meeting with patients/guarantors, who require assistance in seeking and applying for healthcare funding (e.g., Charity Care, Medicaid, or other local/governmental funding program) and/or require assistance in reviewing and establishing payment options. The Financial Counselor is responsible for a broad spectrum of duties, beginning with the initial patient contact, via the pre-admit/pre-registration functions and ending with the control and maintenance of the patient's account until discharge. Within this range, the Financial Counselor is responsible for determining the financial status of the patient during the financial counseling process. Performs cashiering and customer service functions. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2 years of experience in a hospital or clinic environment, insurance company, managed care organization, or other financial service setting.
  • Knowledge of insurance and governmental programs, regulations, and application processes.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Data entry skills (50-60 keystrokes per minute).
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and organizational abilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Notary public credentials preferred.
  • Experience in financial counseling, financial clearance, and customer service activities.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with patients/guarantors to assist in seeking and applying for healthcare funding.
  • Determine the financial status of patients during the financial counseling process.
  • Perform cashiering and customer service functions.
  • Assist patients in completing applications for funding sources.
  • Counsel patients/guarantors on financial liabilities and payment plan options.
  • Collect appropriate patient liabilities at the point of pre-registration.
  • Provide financial education and outline potential funding options.
  • Monitor accounts in the eligibility pending financial class.
  • Perform cashiering functions, including payment receipt and posting.
  • Respond to patient inquiries and generate itemized bills.
