The Financial Counselor position at WellStar Health System plays a crucial role in managing financial interactions with patients and insurance companies. This role involves educating patients about their payment options, financial assistance programs, and other available services. The counselor is responsible for accurately documenting and reporting payment information, ensuring that all patient account information is updated during the pre-admission, inpatient, and outpatient phases of care. A strong understanding of government programs, including appeals and hearing requests, is essential for this position. The Financial Counselor will also screen in-house referrals within a defined timeframe and file patient applications with the appropriate government agencies, collecting and submitting necessary verifying documents to facilitate application approval. Follow-up is a key component of this role, as the counselor must review application denials with patients and file timely appeals as needed. In addition to these responsibilities, the Financial Counselor acts as an intermediary between various departments, including Admitting, the Business Office, and social services, while the patient is hospitalized. The role requires maximizing point-of-service collections by addressing and resolving patient liability balances before discharge. The counselor must minimize financial risk for both the patient and WellStar by accurately identifying the correct insurance plan and ensuring proper notification and verification for precertification or authorization of services rendered. Strong customer service skills are paramount, as the counselor must effectively communicate with patients, families, insurance providers, and physicians. The Financial Counselor is also tasked with identifying and offering any discount programs for which patients may qualify, as well as alternative sources of payment. This includes providing referrals and applications to state, federal, or local agencies that may offer financial assistance. Adherence to established internal policies and procedures for processing payments and cash handling is required, along with strong organizational skills to maintain various documents and electronic records. The counselor must also assist with general hospital information and directions, ensuring a professional appearance and strong communication skills throughout all interactions.
