About The Position

The Controller is responsible for overseeing the daily accounting operations of the bank and ensuring accurate financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and regulatory requirements. This role manages general ledger integrity, financial reporting, budgeting, regulatory reporting support, and internal controls. In a small community bank environment, the Controller is both strategic and hands-on, supporting leadership with timely financial insights while ensuring operational compliance and accuracy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field preferred
  • 5–10 years of progressive accounting experience required; community banking experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and banking regulations
  • Understanding of bank accounting systems and core processing systems
  • Experience with budgeting and financial forecasting
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial leaders and Board members
  • High level of integrity and confidentiality
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Occasional travel to branch locations and community events are required
  • Ability to work at a desk for extended periods

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily accounting operations including general ledger, reconciliations, accounts payable, and fixed assets.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable banking regulations.
  • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and chart of accounts.
  • Review and approve journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Manage month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Assist with preparation and review of Call Report data.
  • Support external audits, internal audits, and regulatory examinations.
  • Ensure compliance with FDIC, state, and federal reporting requirements.
  • Maintain documentation and internal controls to safeguard bank assets.
  • Lead annual budgeting process and monitor performance against budget.
  • Prepare financial forecasts and variance analysis.
  • Provide financial analysis and reporting to senior management and the Board of Directors.
  • Monitor liquidity and capital ratios.
  • Assist with investment accounting and tracking.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls.
  • Recommend process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce risk.
  • Ensure proper segregation of duties within accounting processes.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff (if applicable).
  • Provide cross-training to ensure operational continuity.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, integrity, and teamwork.
