The Financial Aid Specialist is responsible for coordinating and managing State of Michigan financial aid programs, ensuring compliance with awarding, reporting, and reconciliation requirements. This role involves monitoring student eligibility, advising on academic standards, and maintaining accurate records. The specialist also oversees scholarship processes, including application review, outreach, and communication with students and the Foundation Office. Additional duties include developing financial aid publications, assisting with student communications, and supporting office-wide campaigns. The position requires a strong understanding of federal and state regulations, confidentiality, and the ability to respond effectively in high-pressure situations. The specialist contributes to the overall success of the Financial Aid Office and participates in college committees as needed.

  • Coordinate awarding and reporting requirements for State of Michigan financial aid programs
  • Monitor students for State of Michigan programs providing outreach to students about potential eligibility
  • Gather required documentation based on State regulations
  • Advise students on required academic standards to maintain eligibility
  • Monitor ongoing student eligibility requirements for state financial aid programs to ensure only eligible students are awarded and paid
  • Complete the reconciliation and reimbursement processes for state financial aid programs
  • Responsible for reporting requirements in the MiSSG system for state financial aid programs
  • Assist the Director in the preparation of audit requirements related to the state financial aid programs
  • Coordinate scholarship application submissions by reviewing and ranking both applications and recommendations
  • Conduct monthly outreach to students about scholarship opportunities
  • Collect submitted thank you notes and compile submissions for the Foundation Office
  • Conduct outreach campaigns for students who are missing information when accepting their scholarship award
  • Develop and update publications related to financial aid, such as marketing materials and web site
  • Assist with student communication such as emails, voicemail, and walk in student traffic
  • Assist with communication campaigns conducted by the Financial Aid Office
  • Monitor Financial Aid website for updates
  • Provide individual assistance to students troubleshooting individual's needs and providing details on available financial aid programs
  • Maintain knowledge of regulations for both federal and state financial aid programs
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Ability to respond in a prompt and rational manner in stressful situations
  • Serve on College committees as needed
  • Contribute to the overall success of the Financial Aid Office by performing other duties as assigned by the Director of Financial Aid
  • Associate degree required in related field
  • A minimum of three years of increasingly responsible experience in an office work environment
  • Demonstrate ethical conduct and high level of integrity in all aspects of the work environment
  • Exceptional customer service skills and the ability to maintain an excellent working relationship with internal and external customers
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as good listening skills
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude, maturity, initiative and integrity with a professional image contributing to the success of the College

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Three to five years experience in a financial aid office
  • PowerFAIDS or Ellucian Colleague experience
  • 12 months per year
  • 40 hours worked per week
  • Monday - Friday; 8:00 am - 5:00 pm with an hour lunch
