About The Position

At Root, we believe financial clarity creates freedom not just for our clients but also for our firm. The Finance Manager owns our internal financial engine. This role ensures we operate with precision, discipline, and forward-looking insight as we scale. You will not just report numbers, you will help shape decisions. This is not a bookkeeping role. It is a finance ownership role with real leverage and direct impact on how we allocate capital, design compensation, and invest in growth. You will partner closely with the CEO and our external bookkeeping team and become the internal source of truth for how Root makes, spends, and allocates money.

Requirements

  • Experience as a Finance Manager, Senior Analyst, or similar role in a growing professional services firm
  • Strong financial modeling and analytical capabilities
  • Comfort building structure in a scaling environment
  • High judgment, ownership mindset, and attention to detail
  • Clear communicator who can translate numbers into decisions

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the monthly close process in partnership with our external bookkeeper
  • Review financial statements and ensure consistency across systems
  • Maintain clean, audit-ready documentation year-round
  • Ensure deposits, vendor payments, reconciliations, and refunds are accurate and current
  • Manage payroll inputs tied to compensation changes and incentives
  • Calculate and administer quarterly revenue share and annual bonus programs
  • Maintain data required for firm valuation and benchmarking initiatives
  • Partner with department leaders to set annual budgets
  • Own budget vs. actual tracking — with clear narrative explanations, not just spreadsheets
  • Forecast cash flow and proactively manage liquidity
  • Monitor expense discipline, vendor costs, and margin leakage
  • Establish and enforce thoughtful spending guardrails
  • Recommend improvements to financial processes and internal controls
  • Maintain disciplined oversight of Ramp and Mercury accounts
  • Ensure corporate card compliance and timely receipt submission
  • Oversee vendor payments, subscriptions, and contract renewals
  • Maintain organized documentation of financial agreements
  • Develop and maintain executive-level financial dashboards
  • Track firm-level, advisor-level, and segment-level profitability
  • Maintain internal and external benchmarking analyses
  • Identify leading indicators — not just lagging metrics
  • Build and maintain financial models for revenue, profitability, and growth
  • Run scenario modeling for hiring and expansion plans
  • Perform capacity modeling (revenue per advisor, break-even, utilization)
  • Conduct sensitivity analysis tied to strategic initiatives
  • Accrue and pre-calculate bonus pools to avoid year-end surprises
  • Maintain audit readiness and documentation hygiene
  • Strengthen approval workflows and financial thresholds
  • Improve systems and processes to support long-term scale
  • Prepare concise one-page financial briefs ahead of executive meetings
  • Translate financial results into clear implications, risks, and tradeoffs
  • Surface early warning indicators before they become problems
