About The Position

Chattanooga Gas has a new development opportunity for an employee who is interested in progressing to a Field Specialist A position. The successful candidate will receive appropriate training necessary to progress to the Field Specialist A position within a certain timeframe. The successful candidate will serve in an on-call capacity for emergency response and also be responsible for the activation and deactivation of natural gas. Basic Function: Responsible for completing a variety of tasks associated with the installation, activation, deactivation, maintenance and inspection of gas meters and regulators. Also responsible for performing maintenance and repairs on customers appliances and other gas equipment. Responds to routine and emergency requests for gas service and is responsible for repairing leaks on meter sets. Protects meters sets from atmospheric corrosion by painting or replacing piping. Responsible for providing timely and professional customer service by responding to service orders. First responder on emergency calls, including off shift call outs and responsible for making repairs on below ground pipe up to 5/8” in diameter.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum 6 months experience with Field Technician A or Field Technician C work and responsibilities
  • Must be able to make repairs to 5/8" plastic services
  • Experience with hanging gas meter sets, connecting fuel lines, and establishing service to new and existing customers
  • Experience using lead/CO equipment to detect leaks and determine appropriate action
  • Must have a valid state driver's license and pass Company driving tests
  • Working knowledge of basic hand tools and equipment
  • General Meter Activation qualified and certified
  • Proficiency with all required Field Technician A skills
  • Good written and oral communication including listening, probing, problem solving
  • Ability to use good judgment when working in potentially hazardous and emergency environments
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Strong influencing & negotiation skills; ability to resolve and diffuse difficult and/or escalated situations
  • MS Office and Computer skills – intermediate proficiency

  • Ability to smell odorant used to detect gas leaks
  • Operator Qualified in accordance with Company Plan
  • Must have a valid state driver’s license and pass Company driving tests
  • Must be physically able to stoop, bend, crawl, walk, climb ladders, and lift weights in excess of 100 pounds.
  • Ability to occasionally ascend and descend stairs and ladders is required.
  • Must also have keen senses of smell, hearing, vision and color identification.
  • Ability to work in all types of terrain and weather conditions is required.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-2 years Field operations experience in a natural gas operations environment
  • Technical School training and certification
  • Equivalent academic education and experience

Responsibilities

  • Efficiently works a route to complete customer and compliance orders in a timely manner and in accordance with company policies and procedures and operator qualifications procedures.
  • First responder to inside leaks, outside leaks, and damages.
  • Installs and maintains gas meters.
  • Performs basic pipefitting on meter sets (remove meter, install fuel line cut off, replace union).
  • Performs service activation, deactivation, and leak repairs.
  • Responds to routine and emergency gas requests, leak calls, and no gas situations.
  • Conducts and documents complete investigations of customer premises in response to questionable gas consumption (e.g. high bill complaints, stopped meters, etc.) or other issues.
  • Make repairs to 5/8” below ground service lines (identify damage/leak, make repairs in a safe manner).
  • Performs meter inspections and paints as needed to maintain compliance with atmospheric corrosion.
  • Coordinates and performs complex valve operations, maintenance and inspection procedures on all above ground valves.
  • Performs miscellaneous inspections, as required.
  • Using leak detectors as well as natural senses (e.g., smell), locates gas leaks, decides on appropriate action and performs necessary repairs, documenting actions taken.
  • Interacts with customers to answer questions, explain work performed, give instructions for operation of appliances, and promote gas usage.
  • Identifies abnormal operating conditions and takes appropriate actions.
  • Performs computer work and data entry.
  • Actively and accurately captures documentation in the Mobile Data Terminal.
  • Safely operate company assigned vehicles in performance of assignments.
  • Observes all safety requirements and regulatory guidelines to ensure compliance.
  • Available for off shift emergency call outs.
  • Available to work overtime as necessary to meet business requirements and flexibility in working shifts as required.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.
