About The Position

Field Services Technician Level II troubleshoots and repairs any mainline or service drop associated outages. Additional duties include small plant extensions to serve new residential or business complexes. Responsible for any duties to maintain fiber infrastructure. This includes splicing, OTDRs, and other basic troubleshooting to identify and promptly resolve issues. A Field Technician will understand GIS field mapping and documentation and associated features to identify and resolve underground plant issues. Within the framework of governing federal, state, and local laws and policies, the position exercises latitude and independence in the performance of assigned projects and tasks. This Field Services Technician role is responsible for sound judgment, thoroughness, and competence.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • 2 years of locating experience is required.
  • Must possess a valid Iowa Driver License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Successful candidates must pass pre-employment drug screen, job related physical and background checks.
  • 1 year Construction experience is required.
  • Fulfillment experience is required.
  • Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, statutes, regulations, codes, and standards related to the area of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of Waterloo policies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with members of the public and co-workers.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication.
  • Skill in the use of standard office equipment and software.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
  • Skill in resolving customer complaints and concerns.
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

  • Solid understanding of the Iowa 811 Excavator Guide.
  • Solid understanding of American Public Works Association (APWA) color code for locate markings.
  • Basic knowledge of Calix and Cisco installation practices.

Responsibilities

  • Read construction prints and inform engineers of any issues.
  • Ensures the accuracy of Company maps and records as they relate to damage prevention.
  • Ability to operate utility locating equipment such as transmitter and receiver.
  • Ability to follow Waterloo locating procedures and Iowa 811 laws as it pertains to flagging and marking.
  • Determine best and efficient route to each location - maximizing the workday.
  • Remove and replace manhole/handhole lids and terminal covers.
  • Ability to communicate and interact daily with Waterloo departments, construction crews, and homeowners.
  • Interpret and prioritize job order tickets and use a laptop to receive and complete tickets and work orders.
  • Supports construction crews and provides insight on excavation projects, if necessary.
  • Maintains working relationship with excavators and personnel responsible for excavation activities.
  • Promote safety and protection of our fiber-optic assets in the community.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Requires the availability for call out, including some mandatory overtime.
  • Performs any and all other related duties or assignments as assigned.
  • Completes all basic ISP and installation work for Waterloo Fiber.
  • May require weekend and holiday work when necessary.
  • During emergency conditions, all Waterloo employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and are expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.
