About the position

The Field Service Technician 1-2 position at UTOPIA Fiber involves skilled technical work primarily focused on the supervision, leadership, and maintenance of the fiber to the premise network. This role is essential for ensuring the reliability and efficiency of the UTOPIA Fiber production infrastructure. The technician will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining network operations, responding promptly to outages, and performing installations and maintenance of fiber cables, which includes tasks such as splicing, managing splice enclosures, and setting up patch panels. The technician will also assist customers with their needs, ensuring a high level of service and support for both business and residential installations. Collaboration with other technicians, analysts, engineers, and managers is crucial for reporting and addressing any issues that arise within the production infrastructure. In addition to technical responsibilities, the technician will be expected to maintain effective communication with technical staff, management, and customers regarding any network issues. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to maintaining the integrity of the fiber network. The technician will also be involved in asset inventory management, data center audits, and other inventory control procedures, ensuring that all equipment and materials are accounted for and in good working condition. This position is vital for the overall success of UTOPIA Fiber's operations, as it directly impacts customer satisfaction and network performance.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and maintain the UTOPIA Fiber production infrastructure.
  • Respond to network outages promptly and effectively.
  • Install and maintain fiber cables, including splicing, splice enclosures, and patch panels.
  • Assist customers with their needs regarding fiber installations.
  • Collaborate with other technicians, analysts, engineers, and managers for reporting and issue resolution.
  • Notify technical staff, management, and customers of any issues in the production infrastructure.
  • Conduct asset inventory and data center audits as needed.

Requirements

  • Possess a High School diploma/GED or higher education.
  • Field Tech 1: Minimum 1 year of job-related experience in supporting a network cable or fiber plant involving fiber-splicing, Internet, VoIP, or IPTV; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Field Tech 2: Minimum 3 years of job-related experience in supporting a network cable or fiber plant involving fiber-splicing, Internet, VoIP, or IPTV; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of fiber to the home (FTTH) construction and design.
  • Ability to lift, carry, set up, and climb a 28-foot extension ladder.
  • Experience with bucket truck and aerial plant installation and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with CAT 5/6 cabling and termination.
  • Experience with optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) and locating faults in fiber.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with ticketing systems, chat and text systems, and email systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel or Google Docs.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and written skills.
