About The Position

The Field Service Mechanic is responsible for performing maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on a range of equipment—including pickup trucks, semi-trucks, cranes, loaders, etc.—both at the company’s home base and at various job sites across the United States. This role requires strong mechanical expertise, the ability to troubleshoot complex systems, and the flexibility to travel frequently to support field operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; vocational/technical training in diesel or heavy equipment mechanics preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience working with fleet vehicles, diesel engines, cranes, loaders, or similar heavy equipment.
  • Experience performing field service or remote repairs is highly desirable.
  • Strong diagnostic skills across mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Proficient with diagnostic software, scan tools, and repair manuals.
  • Valid CDL Class A or B with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to weld, fabricate, or perform minor machine work.
  • Strong communication and time management skills; capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to lift 50–75 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks such as climbing, bending, and kneeling.
  • Frequent travel required, including occasional overnight stays depending on job site location.
  • Work performed indoors and outdoors in varied environments, including harsh winter and summer weather.
  • Exposure to noise, tools, machinery, heavy equipment, and weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to job sites to diagnose and repair pickup trucks, semi-trucks, and other equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, safety inspections, and emergency repairs in field conditions.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems using diagnostic tools and technical manuals.
  • Complete on-site service calls efficiently to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and major repairs on fleet vehicles and heavy equipment at the home base shop.
  • Prepare service vehicles with tools, parts, and equipment required for field repairs.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of repairs, parts usage, and labor hours in service logs or digital systems.
  • Assist in managing shop inventory for parts, fluids, and specialty tools.
  • Communicate findings, repair plans, and timelines clearly to supervisors, managers, and customers.
  • Provide recommendations on equipment care, maintenance schedules, and operational best practices.
  • Maintain positive, professional relationships with internal teams and customer representatives.
  • Follow company safety policies and industry safety standards, including PPE requirements and equipment lockout/tagout.
  • Follow all traffic laws and safety policies when operating a company vehicle.
  • Ensure service truck and work areas (shop and field) remain clean, organized, and compliant with safety regulations.
  • Safely operate and test heavy equipment after repairs.
