About The Position

The Field Operations Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the construction, operation, and maintenance of the electric system. This role ensures compliance with engineering specifications and industry standards, establishes work priorities, and keeps senior management informed of section activities. The superintendent plans, organizes, supervises, and directs the Construction Department's tasks and crew, providing leadership and safety oversight for both Overhead Transmission and Underground Residential Distribution work.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Engineering degree or extensive field experience preferred.
  • Completion of an applicable apprenticeship program or equivalent skills preferred.
  • 5+ years experience in a supervisory or leadership position in electric operations preferred.
  • Extensive work experience in operation and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution systems.
  • Extensive exposure to emergency/disaster operations.
  • Possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in state of residence.
  • Class A driver's license with a DOT health card preferred.
  • Ability to exercise discretion in conveying confidential information.
  • Ability to effectively supervise a large workforce performing multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to hold individuals accountable for their actions.
  • Willingness to develop and implement changes in standards and practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with outage management systems (OMS) and computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Familiarity with GT Viewer and PowerPlan for job design.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with Work Planning to resource and oversee all types of work based on system and customer needs.
  • Work proactively to ensure crews and leadership work efficiently to minimize outage times.
  • Influence and control the department's portion of SAIDI and CAIDI as part of divisional goals.
  • Communicate with design, key customers, project managers, system operations, and work planning as issues arise.
  • Utilize knowledge of EPB construction specifications, transformer standards, NESC regulations, TDOT, OSHA, and easements to solve problems.
  • Identify, monitor, and correct employee performance among reporting staff promptly and decisively.
  • Assign tasks, set clear objectives/outcomes, and monitor processes and results closely.
  • Perform all phases of the performance management process by setting clear expectations and providing feedback.
  • Exercise supervisory authority regarding personnel matters such as selection, training, and discipline.
  • Analyze and project future personnel requirements.
  • Supervise field personnel and conduct crew evaluations to ensure task completion with maximum efficiency.
  • Inform the Department Manager of all problems, progress, trends, and changes.
  • Participate in developing standards and practices, work rules, and equipment specifications.
  • Ensure all employees have the knowledge and skills to work safely and correctly.
  • Conduct safety training and coordinate with Safety for additional training needs.
  • Conduct and document crew visits regularly to ensure adherence to safety procedures.
  • Prepare and submit evaluations of personnel performance in a timely manner.
  • Work with the Key Customer Group and Field Service Logistics on outages and investigate unusual events.
  • Check time sheets daily for accuracy and compliance with union rules.
  • Execute and record changes to job designs and communicate with system operations.
  • Communicate and coordinate with the meter department for relocating meters.
  • Understand department budget and provide input for long-range planning.
  • Verify contractor time sheets and vendor invoicing for outside labor and material charges.
  • Utilize field experience in decision-making to serve customers effectively.
  • Participate in apprentice committee training evaluations for workforce development.
  • Ensure employees understand the effect of their actions on cross-department projects.
  • Maintain job awareness and ability to resolve issues when away from work.
  • Recommend appropriate training programs and approve course material.
  • Make recommendations to the manager regarding section efficiency and productivity improvements.
  • Work with engineering and management to develop a regular maintenance program.
  • Ensure all jobs are on time and within budget per cost projections.
  • Establish and execute special departmental projects and perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.
  • Work at a high level during system emergencies, providing field supervision and coordinating resources.
  • Pull 24/7 on-call duty for weekly rotations during the year.
  • Responsible for decision-making affecting public safety and the best interest of EPB.
