About The Position

The Xplore Solano Summer Youth Work Experience Program will work to implement conservation work projects and engage in career education related to emerging green careers. Projects could include working with various organizations and agencies within Solano County in the outdoors, to conduct work in areas like urban agriculture, trail maintenance, invasive species removal, nursery work, habitat restoration, and water conservation. The team will have Friday recreation and training opportunities related to watershed health, agriculture, green careers, and more. SCA leaders will pick up and drop off members at a central location. Members are expected to be prepared for the workday: on time, in uniform, with their lunch and water packed. Participants should wear all leather boots to work each day and SCA uniform (will cover in the Orientation). The SCA provides all PPE for each work site. Working environment might be cool in the morning and hot during the day; crew members should dress in layers to be prepared. In addition to PPE, the SCA will also provide training in the safe use of hand tools. Acceptance of this position means the members understands it is a full-time commitment during the dates of the program and will communicate to their crew leaders if there is any potential conflict. The team will consist of 10 members and 2 leaders. The SCA, in partnership with the Workforce Development Board of Solano County is seeking 2 motivated leaders to work together with a team of 10 high school aged members working with local agency's staff on various restoration and public improvement projects. Four days of the program will be working in the field performing duties related to community improvement projects within open spaces of Solano County. Fridays will be hosted by the Workforce Development Board of Solano County focused on worksite wrap-ups, vocational exploration, and connection to community to support emerging climate related careers. This position is ideal for someone with a can-do attitude, problem solving skills, an attentiveness to situations and members' needs, a competence in engaging in care and empathy, and a strong sense of accountability to one's self and the work.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements, and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
  • Must be able to attend Leader training (June 8-June 26), specific dates and times TBD
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age at time of hire -Must have the ability to legally work in the US
  • Must have a valid driver’s license for 3+ years and pass SCA Motor Vehicle Report standards
  • Must be able to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards, Housing is not provided, Leader must be local within Solano County

Nice To Haves

  • Non-expired Wilderness First Aid or Responder Certification
  • Experience with conservation projects including trail building, tree planting and maintenance, urban agriculture and forestry, park maintenance

Responsibilities

  • Supervising and leading a crew of young adult members in conservation service work and activities that could include: Planting, pruning, watering, mulching, invasive species management and mitigation
  • Basic carpentry and infrastructure projects
  • Conduct site visits with land management staff and complete job hazard assessments.
  • Driving an SCA Provided vehicle to facilitate crew member transportation needs and to transport tools and materials throughout Solano County.
  • This position will generally require walking over uneven terrain and working in parks and natural spaces while working in a team-based setting. The service work will be physically demanding at times and may include repetitive tasks.
  • Supporting members to complete timecards on a biweekly basis.
  • Tracking metrics and outputs with respect to project activities.
  • Complete end of program evaluation and assessments
  • Contribute to a final presentation and report with crew.
