About The Position

This is an intermediate level technical position supporting higher level inspectors and engineers in functional areas of roadway and structures construction inspection: materials sampling, inspection, and testing. Work usually involves a fairly wide range of decision making and use of judgement and may involve providing work direction to others.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of materials, methods and equipment used in GDOT transportation construction.
  • Considerable knowledge of mathematical functions, including algebra, geometry and trigonometry related to transportation engineering.
  • Skill in use of computers and associated software.
  • Ability to read, interpret and explain such documents as construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and inspection procedures.
  • Ability to take notes and prepare or review reports.
  • Effective communication skills (written and oral) and ability to supervise to coordinate activities of lower-level employees and instruct them concerning proper work and documentation.
  • Shall be licensed to operate vehicles in accordance with Georgia law.
  • Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Worksite Erosion Control Supervisor (WECS)
  • GDOT Field Concrete Technician Certification a plus Licensed to operate motor vehicles in accordance with Georgia Law.
  • High School Diploma or GED with a minimum of eighteen (18) months of progressive transportation technician experience as an employee or consultant for a State Highway Agency; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.
  • Minimum OSHA 10 Certification.
  • Georgia Soil & Water Conservation Commission (GSWCC) Level 1A Certification a preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • GDOT Field Concrete Technician Certification a plus
  • Bachelors degree preferred.
  • Georgia Soil & Water Conservation Commission (GSWCC) Level 1A Certification a preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform moderately complex inspections; or supervise other inspectors conducting routine and standardized inspections.
  • Work includes inspecting asphalt and concrete for acceptable materials and mix; pavement for proper spreading, rolling, depth, alignment and compaction; roadways and structures for conformance to plans/specifications, structural materials and members, placement of culverts and backfill; and traffic control and erosion control devices.
  • May perform the more complex variety of calculations and computations.
  • Perform contract documentation duties which includes field measurements of pay items as well as other client required documentation.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
