Field Geologist
About The Position
S&ME is seeking a full-time Field Geologist to support drilling operations for Southern Company at various locations in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. This role primarily involves providing technical direction and ensuring the successful execution of subsurface field investigations for engineering site assessments, environmental studies, and foundation remediation. The position requires extensive travel, with weekly reporting to Southern Company's Logan Martin Dam office in Vincent, Alabama, for scheduled projects. A company truck will be provided, and travel expenses will be covered by Southern Company. S&ME is an employee-owned firm with over 50 years of experience in geotechnical, civil, environmental, and construction materials engineering, committed to employee growth and client excellence, with a team of over 1,000 employee-owners across 10+ states.
Requirements
- A Bachelor's degree in Geology or a related field
- 3+ years of experience working directly in a geologic, environmental, engineering, construction, or other geological-related field
- Experience in field investigations utilizing various drilling methods
- Soil and rock logging experience
- Environmental sampling and testing methods experience
- Regulatory knowledge
- Project budget management
- Proficiency in the gINT Boring Log Program
- Flexible computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work with limited supervision
- Safety-first mindset
- Strong customer focus and conflict resolution skills
- Comply with Fleet Management, Substance Policy, and Reference Check requirements
- Valid employment eligibility (I-9)

- A Professional Geology (PG) license
Responsibilities
- Field oversight for monitoring well installation programs, foundation investigations, underground utility investigations, or related projects
- Perform soil and rock logging
- Prepare professional logs for soil, rock, and monitoring well construction data
- Manage drilling and other related contractors according to company guidelines and procedures
- Interface with various customers and assist Drilling Services leaders and internal drilling resources to facilitate field investigations
