The Field Evaluations Engineer position at UL, LLC involves managing the execution and timely completion of Field Evaluation projects with minimal supervision. The role requires the development of UL requirements, test methods, and test equipment for complex, new, or unusual products. The engineer will conduct on-site evaluations to assist regulatory authorities in determining product compliance, leading to the approval of installations. This process includes documentation review, visual and mechanical inspections, and ensuring suitability for installation according to the National Electrical Code and other applicable codes. The engineer will also be responsible for creating engineering reports based on their findings. In this role, the engineer will independently determine project scope, develop preliminary investigation plans, and establish project specifications by analyzing client input and product construction. The position requires frequent travel for on-site evaluations, including some international travel. The engineer will initiate communication with clients and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) to promote and explain the benefits of UL's services, discuss technical issues, and negotiate project timelines and requirements. The engineer will also provide technical assistance to clients regarding product evaluations and plans review, represent UL at meetings and industry functions, and address client concerns to resolve complex issues. They will be responsible for planning, conducting, and supervising major code and regulatory projects, serving as the Project Handler of record, and signing as Reviewer of record as assigned. The role may involve developing test requirements for products that exceed existing standards or involve unique features, as well as creating special test methods and equipment. The engineer may also provide leadership and technical advice on special projects involving complex issues.
