About The Position

The Field Engineer is responsible for all construction layout, collection of survey data, installation of control, and project as-built documentation. The field engineer ensures that all necessary features of work are laid out and installed correctly. The field engineer is also responsible for identifying and resolving field issues involving design, plan coordination, layout, and elevations prior to work. They must effectively communicate with all levels of personnel on the jobsite and at the home office.

Requirements

  • Understanding of heavy construction, including but not limited to demolition, earthwork, utilities, and concrete paving and associated heavy equipment used during execution of work
  • Familiarity with requirements and interpretation of drawings, specifications, submittals, RFI’s and other construction related documentation
  • In-depth understanding and capability to read and interpret drawings and specifications
  • Ability to perform and be proficient in geometrical and mathematical calculations
  • Knowledge and ability necessary to perform accurate layout and surveying with the use of a total station, GPS, levels, and data collectors
  • Knowledge and ability to effectively function within and interpret AutoCad, Carlson, and other similar types of programs
  • Knowledge of basic computer systems and software (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Able to delegate work appropriately, and follow through to verify completion of tasks
  • Strong decision making and problem solving skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Endurance and ability to visit entire job site, including stairs or other elevated structures
  • Minimum 5 years of field engineering experience, with a focus on heavy construction.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Thoroughly understands entire contracted scope of work
  • Attends and engages in pre-construction, progress, scheduling, and project/staff meetings
  • Performs layout duties in such a manner that quality is of the utmost importance, understanding that work items will be installed in locations per the direction given
  • Utilizes field engineering and layout hardware, software and technology (level, GPS, total station, Carlson, Leica, etc.) to its greatest and proper capabilities to ensure the most precise and accurate work can be performed and accomplished
  • Performs quality control duties, checks previously installed work, identifies and documents work installed incorrectly and notifies supervisors, and holds team members accountable for doing the work correctly the first time and in compliance with all contract terms and conditions
  • Ensures that all materials used are in accordance with project documents
  • Maintains an organized, accurate and up-to-date set of all project drawings and as-builts; communicates with project team regarding project documentation, revisions and changes
  • Ensures that a DOUBLE-CHECK is performed, by a separate surveyor, on all layout work before construction begins
  • Proactively plans work items to ensure ON-TIME completion
  • Coordinates the work of subcontractors to ensure field engineering needs are met
  • Proactively identifies conflicts/issues within construction documents and progress; communicates them to project team for timely resolution
  • Tracks project schedules and progress to ensure all duties will be performed on-time on multiple projects
  • Efficiently manages workload to keep projects moving forward in a timely manner
  • Performs quantity tracking and calculating when assigned and documents/communicates to project team
  • Coordinates, communicates, and proactively engages with project management and field supervisors; reviewing work plans, and progress to identify issues and opportunities
  • Be actively engaged on your project

  • Provide leadership and guidance during safety meetings, encouraging others opinions and engagement

  • Recognize and identify hazards in upcoming work and pro-actively engage with the project manager and safety manager to mitigate any upcoming risks
  • Remove employees that refuse to work safely
  • Be knowledgeable regarding DURR’s safety requirements… it is difficult to enforce something if you do not understand it. Familiarize yourself with our Safety Manual.
