About The Position

College-level individuals in this program gain hands-on experience in heavy civil marine construction with emphasis on rock placement, dredging production, survey coordination, and field execution. Interns are primarily assigned to active field projects where they support Field Engineers and Project Managers in the planning, tracking, and successful execution of rock and dredging scopes. Exposure may also include limited office-based assignments focused on estimating, cost tracking, and procurement specific to marine and dredging operations. The incumbent must support the guiding beliefs and core values of Orion, centered on Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, built upon the foundation of Integrity.

Requirements

  • Individuals in this position must be enrolled in a Civil Engineering or Construction Science curriculum that leads to a B.S. Degree at an accredited college or university.
  • The incumbent must have the ability to quickly learn the technical aspects of the business; be an effective communicator; and have the ability to interface well with employees at all levels of the organization.

  • Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency situation arise.
  • Walking, stepping, climbing, or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, and normally involves physically getting onto and off of work barges, boats, vessels, or dock facilities of varying heights and access parameters.
  • Standing, stooping kneeling, squatting, climbing, or sitting for long periods of time.
  • Climbing vertical ladders to heights of 40’-50’.
  • Working in confined spaces and at elevated heights.
  • Lifting and carrying objects up to 50 lbs. as required.
  • Adapting to extreme temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure.
  • Remaining calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident.
  • Being qualified and physically able to drive regular passenger vehicles to visit work locations and job sites.

Nice To Haves

  • Academic coursework that has been completed in Project Management & Administration, Marine Construction Materials, Procurement, Estimating, Scheduling, Project Tracking Software, Cost Control, Engineering & Project Standards, and Safety & Environmental Compliance is desired.
  • Prior work experience in the marine construction industry is preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Works at one or more project sites as assigned by the Project Manager or Superintendent to learn how rock placement and dredging work is performed.
  • Assists with daily production tracking for dredging activities (e.g., cubic yards dredged, loads placed, cycle times, downtime tracking).
  • Supports rock placement operations including quantity verification, placement logs, barge tracking, and coordination with survey crews.
  • Assists with interpretation of hydrographic survey data, dredge cut lines, and as-built conditions.
  • Learns how dredging equipment (cutter suction dredges, clamshell dredges, barges, booster pumps, tugs) and rock placement spreads operate.
  • Assists with monitoring environmental compliance requirements including turbidity monitoring, material disposal documentation, and permit adherence.
  • Participates in pre-task planning, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and daily safety meetings.
  • Assists Field Engineers with RFI tracking, submittals, quantity takeoffs, and field documentation.
  • Coordinates with craft, equipment operators, survey personnel, and subcontractors to ensure work is executed according to plan.
  • Supports quality control activities including verification of grades, slopes, and material placement tolerances.
  • Assists in preparing quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for rock and dredging scopes.
  • Supports production reporting, cost tracking, and earned value analysis for active projects.
  • Assists in procurement of materials such as armor stone, filter stone, geotextiles, and dredging support equipment.
  • Reviews plans, specifications, and geotechnical reports to understand project requirements.
  • Assists in schedule updates and sequencing of marine spreads and support equipment.
  • Interfaces with project team members, suppliers, surveyors, and regulatory representatives as required.
  • Responsible and accountable for incumbent’s own personal safety.
  • Responsible and accountable for the safety of all co-workers and any others incumbent comes in contact with.
  • Authorized and obligated to stop work on any task or series of tasks whenever an unsafe condition or situation is anticipated or is observed.
  • Complies with all applicable laws, regulations and Company policies and procedures, and is subject to appropriate disciplinary action (including dismissal) for failure to do so.
