About The Position

The Fiber Splicing Technician splices, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs fiber optic cables. This role is crucial for ensuring proper signal transmission and network performance through various responsibilities including end-of-line network testing, cable preparation, and managing fiber optic equipment.

Requirements

  • Ability to do physical labor, climb ladders and poles, work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to read blueprints for job specifications.
  • Must be able to distinguish between different colors for fiber connections.
  • Self-starter and internally motivated.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills (oral and written).
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Basic math skills for computing measurements.
  • Ability to listen and follow directions.
  • Organized, multi-task oriented, and maintain a neat work environment.
  • Ability to work in high places and confined spaces.

Responsibilities

  • End-of-Line Network Testing: Testing light levels at the end of fiber networks for balanced signal between points.
  • Cable Prep: Ensure that cables are properly labeled and organized to minimize errors during installation.
  • Build Fiber Cases and Enclosures: Construct protective housings for fiber optic equipment and connections.
  • Splice Color for Color Fibers: Match the colors of the fibers when splicing to ensure correct connections.
  • Cable Management: Organize cables neatly within the enclosure to prevent tangling or damage.
  • Sealing and Placement of Case: Ensure the enclosure is properly closed and secured.
  • Read Prints and Maps: Examine Splice Matrix and redline maps to understand fiber routes.
  • Splice off color and multiple cables in one enclosure.
  • Jumping Trays: Route fibers from one tray to another for optimized cable management.
  • Splice Tie Point and Jumper Cases: Connect fibers from different cables at a tie point.
  • Connect Jumper cables between jumper cases.
  • Rehab gel-filles cases: Refurbish gel-filled enclosures used in fiber optic networks.
  • Redlining and Documentation: Annotate existing drawings with changes or updates.
  • Case swaps and audits: Replace equipment cases or enclosures.
  • Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve issues affecting network performance.
  • May pull cable through existing duct package or conduit and splice and activate underground and aerial lines.
  • Other duties as assigned.
