About The Position

The Fiber Optic Test Technician is responsible for executing all optical testing and inspection procedures on fiber optic cable assemblies to ensure compliance with customer specifications, engineering drawings, and applicable international standards. This role performs insertion loss (IL), return loss (RL), endface geometry, and visual inspections, while maintaining accurate documentation and full traceability. The technician supports troubleshooting efforts, collaborates cross-functionally, and upholds product quality through disciplined and precise testing practices.

Requirements

1–3 years of experience in fiber optic testing, inspection, or a related quality role.
Hands-on experience with MT, LC, SC, and other common fiber connector types.
Proficient with optical test equipment including light sources, power meters, OTDRs, interferometers, and visual inspection scopes.
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, test specifications, and detailed work instructions.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office (especially Excel), PDF documentation, and ERP systems (e.g., EVO, Oracle).

Nice To Haves

Fiber Optic Association (FOA) Certification
Experience with mil-aero cable assemblies and defense/aerospace standards
Prior experience using Viavi, EXFO, or Keysight test systems
Experience working in cleanroom or ESD-controlled environments is a plus

Responsibilities

Optical Testing (Insertion Loss & Return Loss)
Perform Insertion Loss (IL) testing at 850 nm and other specified wavelengths per engineering drawings and customer requirements.
Conduct Return Loss (RL) testing using calibrated optical test equipment.
Apply approved test exceptions, including pin-specific exclusions, as defined in drawings or traveler instructions.
Interpret test results against required thresholds (e.g., IL = 0.50 dB or IL = 0.85 dB @ 850 nm).
Execute IL testing in accordance with Method D1 and Procedure 3-4.4-460, when applicable.
Save test data and provide completed reports with final cable assemblies.
Endface Geometry & Visual Inspection
Perform endface geometry inspections using interferometry equipment (e.g., DORC, Sumix) in compliance with EN-50377-15-1.
Conduct visual inspections per IEC-61300-3-35, identifying contamination, scratches, and endface defects.
Save, log, and maintain inspection records to ensure traceability and support quality audits.
Documentation & Reporting
Generate and submit accurate IL/RL and inspection reports for each assembly.
Label and store all data files with traceable part numbers and serial numbers.
Follow strict file naming conventions, data storage policies, and customer reporting requirements.
Ensure all documentation is complete, accurate, and compliant with internal and external standards.
Compliance & Process Control
Adhere to all documented test procedures, work instructions, and blueprint specifications.
Verify that all test equipment is properly calibrated and functioning correctly.
Identify nonconformances and escalate issues to Quality or Engineering for resolution.
Maintain a high level of accuracy, consistency, and reliability in all testing activities.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with Manufacturing and Engineering teams on ECNs and process updates.
Support production through troubleshooting feedback and corrective action implementation.
Participate in quality audits, root cause investigations, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Additional Responsibilities
Follow customer-specific procedures and verify test completion using approved end-to-end test methods.
Apply specific labeling, test exemptions, and pin-level requirements as defined in drawings and build documentation.
Ensure compliance with all test callouts noted in travelers and assembly instructions.
