About The Position

This is a highly skilled technical engineering position in the Ocala Fiber Network Division of the City. Reports to the Director or Designee.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or GED and an Associate Degree with courses relevant to engineering.
  • Minimum three years experience in the designing of Fiber Optic networks. Any equivalent combination of education and experience can be substituted for each year of college.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Operators Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, techniques and equipment utilized in the design, construction, operation and repair of fiber optical facilities.
  • Must have thorough and complete knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and procedures applicable to electric and telecommunications utility industry and the ability to apply them in day-to-day engineering situations.
  • Ability to perform highly technical engineering computations, compiles technical data, and performs routine technical assignments.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of plate assemblies, electric/fiber optical material and labor associated with creating work orders and cost estimates.
  • Must have considerable knowledge of GIS and system maps and their applicability to engineering tasks.
  • Ability to conduct daily work operations competently with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills and have the ability to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Must be able to remain calm in stressful situations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervision, city officials, contractors, and the general public.
  • Ability to prepare, interpret, and understand technical plans, specifications, and reports. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; and understand and follow complex and technical oral and written instructions.
  • Must be able to walk around site pushing an 8 lb. measuring wheel to measure distance from one point to another and then using a 3 lb. hammer manually drives wooden stakes into ground to reflect path of fiber service and be able to walk at least ½ mile while looking up at existing fiber paths.

  • Knowledge of Billing Systems a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Process service orders for residential and commercial services and determines material and labor costs through work-order system. Must be able to establish good working relationship with customers, contractors, and developers.
  • Designs large complex overhead and underground fiber optic facilities for residential and commercial developments. Prepares construction drawings, cost estimates and work orders by using the computerized work order system.
  • Responsible for obtaining easements, customer billings, county and state right-of-way permits, and tree trimming permits.
  • Utilizes GIS, work order system, and designer software, databases and spreadsheets for calculations and the creation of work orders. Knowledge of Billing Systems a plus.
  • Prepare plans, cost estimates, and work orders for large-scale, highly complex maintenance, repair, and relocation projects on the fiber system.
  • Physically measures and stakes locations for poles, downguys, pedestals and vaults for overhead and underground fiber.
  • Attends staff meetings, safety meetings, pre-construction meetings, committee meetings, training classes, and site plan meetings.
  • Provides technical assistance and interpretation for construction crews.
  • Will be required to respond under emergency conditions. Required to report to work not less than 40% of the time called out each calendar year.
