About The Position
Join the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) as a Ferryboat Deckhand on the Cameron Ferry, where you'll play a key role in safely loading and unloading vehicles and collecting tolls to support smooth and efficient ferry operations. In this role, you'll assist passengers with professionalism and care, collect and record tolls, and support the safe operation of the vessel through routine safety checks, emergency preparedness, and active participation as a designated crew member in accordance with Coast Guard requirements. This posting may fill multiple positions. No experience or training is required. NOTE: Possession of a current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) may be required at the time of appointment.The official job specifications for this role, as defined by the State Civil Service, can be found here.

Responsibilities
- Classifies vehicles and registers class and axles of each vehicle boarding the vessel, collects appropriate toll, process change and issues receipts
- Completes vessel passenger and vehicle count sheets.
- Performs security and safety checks on vehicles boarding, while underway and departing the vessel.
- Serves as "Designated Member of the Crew" in accordance with the requirement of the vessels Coast Guard Certificates of Inspection.
- Operates emergency equipment such as firefighting hoses, fire extinguishers, rescue boats, life rings, floats, in drills actual emergencies.
- Serves as "lookout" to assist in safe navigation and handles lines in recovery of vessels adrift.
