About The Position

The Ferryboat Deckhand 1-3 position is responsible for safely loading and unloading vehicles and pedestrians on the Cameron Ferry, while also maintaining toll records and ensuring the safety of all passengers. This role requires adherence to safety protocols and participation in training programs, with opportunities for career progression based on experience. The position operates under the supervision of the Marine Master and involves manual labor and routine maintenance tasks aboard a state-owned marine vessel.

Requirements

• No experience or training is required.
• Possession of a current Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is required.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in marine operations or ferry services is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Classifies vehicles and registers class and axles of each vehicle boarding the vessel, collects appropriate toll, processes change, and issues receipts.
• Performs security and safety checks on vehicles boarding, while underway and departing the vessel.
• Fastens and loosens hawsers and mooring lines to piers, operates bilge pumps, traffic ramps, and gates on the vessel.
• Loads and unloads material and equipment for use on the vessel, and performs routine maintenance such as cleaning, scraping, painting, and changing oil and filters.
• Serves as 'Designated Member of the Crew' and assumes control of the vessel in the event the Master becomes incapacitated.
• Operates emergency equipment such as firefighting hoses, fire extinguishers, and rescue boats during drills and actual emergencies.
