About The Position

Serve as a member of a ferry boat crew adhering to all U.S. Coast Guard and VDOT regulations while representing VDOT in a positive manner. Assist Chief Engineer in operating main engines and auxiliary machinery. Report to Chief Engineer any condition that may be out of normal parameters and may affect the vessel operation. How you will contribute: Ferry Operations: Assists with traffic as necessary including serving Emergency Helmsman and as ferry crew member on deck when needed. Others duties as directed to meet the business needs of the ferry. Monitor and Clean Operating Machinery: Record temperatures and pressures of equipment. Report to Chief Engineer all out of parameter readings. Correct lines-up, starts, and stops machinery as directed. Record and ensure appropriate tank levels. Wipe down engine room main and auxiliary engines. Sweep and mop decks and clean surfaces as directed. Assist in refueling and machinery repair. Ensure assigned areas are kept clean and free of debris. Other duties as directed to meet the needs of the ferry. Vessel Security and Emergency Response: Provide information and assistance to public when needed. Provide obvious and positive directions to vehicle operators as they board and, or depart ferry. Take necessary action within the trained abilities to mitigate violations. Respond to all emergencies in a timely and appropriate manner. Demonstrate ability to respond to emergency situations.

Requirements

  • Ability to coordinate specific job duties with crew members.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications and licenses within designated period.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to respond to emergency operations when necessary.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Must hold a minimum MMC - endorsed as Qualified Member of Engine Department (QMED).
  • Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with general public as well as operations and maintenance personnel.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical operations within a distribution system, generator, and crossover.
  • Knowledge of diesel engine operations.

Nice To Haves

  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Watercraft Operations or related field desired.
  • Experience as a sailor or marine and as a VDOT Watercraft Crew Member.
  • Experience working on motor vehicles.
