About The Position

The goal of the Thoracic Transplantation & MCS Surgery Fellowship is to provide specialized training on the care of patients with advanced, end-stage heart and lung failure. This consists of a progressive knowledge base, progressive patient responsibility, and progressive operative interaction. This consists of a progressive knowledge base, progressive patient responsibility, and progressive operative interaction in heart transplant/MCS and Lung Transplant/ECMO. The transplantation & mcs fellow will work at the direction of the Emory Thoracic Transplantation & MCS Medical Director and function across the Emory University Hospital (primary site), Emory University Hospital Midtown, and Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital campuses. In addition, the fellow will obtain full privileges across the Emory System of Hospitals that perform cardiac surgery. Upon completion of the fellowship, the candidate will expertly manage end‑stage heart and lung failure and perform advanced mechanical support, ECMO, organ procurement, and cardiothoracic transplant procedures.
The Thoracic Transplantation & MCS Surgery Fellow will receive advanced training in and be responsible for the following knowledge areas and skills sets including, but not limited to:(1) Serve as primary surgeon or surgical first assist on complex high risk transplantation & muscular circulatory support surgical procedures under the direction and supervision of the Director of Thoracic Transplantation & MCS Surgery and other cardiothoracic surgeons;(2) Spend dedicated, protected time learning pathologic conditions causing acute and chronic heart failure, acute and chronic lung failure, and long-term conditions related to transplant, immunosuppression, and mechanical support;(3) Comprehensive preoperative evaluation, operative management, and postoperative care of patients with end‑stage heart and lung failure, including intensive care management and the treatment of postoperative complications related to thoracic transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. The fellow will also refine skills in organ explant procedures, with dedicated clinic time provided under the supervision of the Director of Thoracic Transplantation & MCS Surgery at Emory Healthcare;(4) Supervise and train other cardiothoracic surgery residents and/or fellows, NP’s and PA’s in performing admissions, rounds, consults, progress notes, on diagnosis and treatment of end-stage heart and lung failure patients;(5) Interpretation and assessment of diagnostic imaging studies;(6) Participation in both emergent and elective thoracic transplantation & muscular circulatory surgical procedures;(7) Participate in various clinical and translational research projects as part of the Emory Cardiothoracic Surgery Research Laboratory. In addition to education and scholarly pursuits as determined by the Medical Director to support the mission of the Thoracic Transplantation & MCS program.(8) Sole responsibility for a bi-monthly Emory Healthcare Thoracic Aortic Surgical Conference, providing education to faculty, residents and fellows on the contemporary management of thoracic aortic disease.

Requirements

• Completion of an ACGME-accredited (or equivalent) cardiothoracic surgery residency program.
• Completion of all three USMLE or COMLEX examination steps.
• Board Certified or Board Eligible according to American Board of Thoracic Surgery requirements.
• A current (or eligibility for) full Georgia Medical License and DEA license.
• International candidates must hold a valid ECFMG certificate and hold a valid U.S. Visa (i.e., Green Card, H1B).
• Ability to function independently in the operating room, manage complex critical care situations with confidence, and demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of advanced cardiothoracic surgery principles and practice.
