About The Position

The Dathel and John Georges Student Center is located on the second floor of the Clemons Library. It hosts programming and services to improve students' access to and knowledge about UVA resources. The Center seeks to employ one Federal Work Study Front Desk Intern who will play an important role in running the space and its programs during the Spring 202 6 semester. This position will participate in a structured internship experience through the Transformational Federal Work-Study (TFWS) Internship Program . The Intern will be stationed at the Center's front desk, sharing a wide variety of responsibilities. These may include: Responding to walk-in inquiries at the Center's front desk (including questions about the library and the space, as well as inquiries about academic and advising resources) . Arranging spaces prior to reservations and assisting partner offices with their needs in the space . Assisting with events that the Georges Student Center hosts, such as fairs in the center and the Majors Fair and Advising Summit at Newcomb Hall . Assisting with Academic Support Programs such as P2L and PAC, which take place at George's Student Center. Assisting with the Center's digital signage and other duties related to programming and management of the space, as determined by the Director and the Spaces Coordinator . In addition to the job duties and responsibilities outlined above, this position will participate in a structured internship experience through the Internship Placement Program (IPP) . If selected, interns must enroll in either UNST 3910 (1 cr.) or UNST 3920 (1 cr.). (the courses are offered 9+ times during the spring, offering plenty of options to choose from. Through this robust internship experience, students will receive dedicated career support from their supervisor and gain key skills and competencies that align with future job interests. The FWS Internship will look great on your resume and provide the student with impactful stories to share in interviews. Internships are best suited for students in their 2 nd – 4 th years. Applicants must be punctual, reliable, and able to work independently, as shifts will often be unsupervised. Front Desk Assistants' working hours usually range from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., with later opening on the weekends. We prefer candidates who can work between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays. Hires can expect to work 10 hours per week during regular semesters and maybe more hours (fewer than 20 hours per week) during midterm or final exam weeks . The Center seeks to employ students with a broad array of experience and interests, and students of all majors are encouraged to apply. However, those with prior experience working with the public or a high level of knowledge of university resources are particularly encouraged to apply. Successful applicants will be interested in improving the advising experience for their peers; capable of interacting professionally with students, faculty, staff, and co-workers; punctual and detail-oriented; and able to work as part of a team. A Successful Intern may repeat the Internship Program in the future semester .
