Federal Work Study - Communications Assistant will assist in the general daily operations of the Communications & Media Technologies Department. This position plays a supportive role in department events & maintaining the studios (Room 250 and Room 140), relevant hardware, software, and master control rooms in working order. This Federal Work Study position will support current students (other than the student worker) in the following ways: Helping Communications students handle video & audio gear responsibly, assisting instructors with their classes, and improving the overall flow & demand of the classroom and studios. In addition, this position will complement and reinforce a Federal Work Study student’s educational program or vocational goals in the following ways: Improve and deepen their understanding of broadcast production, video production, audio mixing, streaming, and strengthening administrative & organizational skills.

Requirements

  • Basic computer skills
  • Gear handling, wire handling, basic audio and/or film knowledge preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Department Director, Academic Administrator, staff, students, and faculty
  • Help maintain the department’s general areas and office supplies to keep clean and organized
  • Flyers – create post and update flyers regularly
  • Update display walls as needed
  • Help with setting up classrooms before the beginning of each semester between classes
  • Responsible for some basic functions regarding video shoots and audio recording in the studio. Responsibilities include lighting, stage set-up, operation of equipment such as video camera, teleprompter and chromakey, maintaining studio in working order.
  • Color and black & white copiers (i.e., call for service, stock with paper, remove paper jams, instruct faculty and students, etc.)
  • Any additional equipment (e.g., fax machine, printers, etc.), survey equipment and rooms to report large repairs needed to the Academic Administrator
  • Assist students with use & maintenance of studio equipment
