About The Position

This role will be located at one of Discovery Land Company’s locations: Silo Ridge Field Club, set in Amenia, New York. Silo Ridge Field Club is seeking an Farm Supervisor to join the Farm & Garden Department. This position is year-round: Full Time (40 hours/week) from March-December; Part-Time (20 hours/week) in January-February. The position of Farm Supervisor is a unique blend of farming and hospitality work with a focus on organic vegetable and flower production, and assisting in getting members meaningfully involved in the community farm. In this role, you will be part of creating the Discovery Land Company experience for our members and fellow employees.

Requirements

  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience in organic commercial vegetable growing
  • Extraordinary attention to detail, quality and service.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and shifts greater than eight (8) hours in length.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position including, but not limited to, working indoors and outdoors, standing, walking, and moving for periods of greater than four (4) hours, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Positive attitude, professional demeanor, and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to deliver service to members, guests, and team members.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to stay calm and focused during the busiest of times.

Nice To Haves

  • Row crop cultivation, machinery operating skills, and organic systems knowledge are preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in overall upkeep of the farm including plants, vegetable, fruit and herb care, soil preparation, seeding, transplanting, fertilization, pest control, weeding, harvesting, post harvest handling, distribution, greenhouse management, orchard care, livestock care, irrigation and other infrastructure management.
  • Manage the seeding schedule for all fruits and vegetables, knowledge of the local county best practices for growing and timing of crop rotation.
  • Basic care for small farm animals (chickens, goats, rabbits, bees) such as feeding, watering, and cleaning pens as appropriate.
  • Showcase the farm, greenhouse and garden areas to members, guests, and prospects, while maintaining cleanliness of work areas.
  • Communicate harvesting schedules to the Food and Beverage, Culinary, and Member Services departments.
  • Monitor harvest weights, and share with Executive Chef.
  • Work with the garden team and culinary team to create and execute new offerings, farm dinners and activities.
  • Stock and re-stock items as needed throughout the day.
  • Attend department meetings and trainings as necessary.
  • Work with the Farm Manager to create opportunities for members and their families to spend meaningful time at the farm.
  • Assist in the creation, development and of educational based programs and workshops.
  • Assist in weekly and monthly member communications, providing updates on farm offerings, availability, and upcoming indoor and outdoor events.
  • Providing excellent service while assisting to members requests and needs.
