Requirements

  • Education: BS in Agriculture, Crop Science, Horticulture, or a related field.
  • Experience: 5+ years in the vegetable seed industry, ideally with processing tomatoes in the greenhouse and open field.
  • Leadership: Proven track record of managing hourly agricultural teams and resolving personnel issues. Strong attention to detail is critical to success in the role.
  • Technical Skills: Hands-on farm experience; certified to apply crop protection; proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Communication: Professional fluency in English is required. Good Spanish verbal fluency is also a requirement.
  • Logistics: Valid driver’s license with a clean record.
  • Outdoor Work: Frequent exposure to extreme heat, cold, and rain.
  • Physicality: Ability to lift 50 lbs and stand or walk on uneven terrain for long periods.
  • Schedule: Dynamic hours, including extended shifts, weekends, and holidays during peak seasons

Responsibilities

  • General Farm Management
  • Supervision: Manage employees and daily operations for the greenhouse, open-field farm, and on-site microwave lab.
  • Compliance: Ensure all activities meet local/federal laws and company safety standards; manage permits for pesticides, water, and hazardous materials.
  • Budgeting: Track expenditure against the annual plan, implementing cost-saving strategies and managing seasonal labor needs.
  • Maintenance: Oversee the upkeep of all farm equipment, vehicles, lab tools, and irrigation pumps.
  • Field & Greenhouse Operations
  • Open Field Activities: Lead all fieldwork, including soil preparation (disking, ripping), bed making, and irrigation setup.
  • Trial Management: Oversee the precise transplanting of tomato research plots.
  • Crop Health: Direct irrigation, fertility programs, and Pest Management working closely with the Pathologist and ensuring good quality control
  • Sanitation: Work with the pathologist to ensure good practice is followed across all operations to maintain healthy plants and resulting seed.
  • Greenhouse: Manage optimal growing conditions (lighting, temperature, fertigation) for tomato seed production.
  • Greenhouse Pollination: Manage pollination work crews in the greenhouse ensuring minimal errors.
  • Seed Operations
  • Seed Saving: Supervise harvesting, seed treatment of seed ensuring full compliance with treatment protocols.
  • Quality Control: Ensure good compliance with protocols to minimize errors and ensure full and detailed compliance with established protocols.
  • Logistics: Coordinate the delivery of tomato samples to labs and manage hand-harvest labor crews.
