About The Position

Brooklyn Grange [http://www.brooklyngrangefarm.com], the world’s leading soil-based rooftop farming business, is seeking a focused, hard-working individual with at least one year of farming experience to join the crew at the 1-acre Jacob K. Javits Convention Center rooftop farm in Manhattan. Crew members report to onsite Farm Manager and support a range of production activities, including greenhouse propagation, bed preparation, cultivation and harvest, packing vegetable orders, compost management, pest and disease treatment, and occasional infrastructure projects. The farm is a fast-paced, public-facing environment where quality, efficiency, and attention to detail are essential. As part of a four-person crew, team members should communicate well, work collaboratively, and take pride in maintaining a clean, productive workspace. This physically demanding role requires working outdoors in all weather, repeatedly lifting heavy loads, and spending extended periods kneeling, bending, squatting, and reaching. This is a hand-scale rooftop farm that relies heavily on people-power and non-mechanised means of production. This is a Prevailing Wage position, subject to all applicable related rules, regulations, and employment terms.

Requirements

  • Has at least 1 full season of farm experience
  • Is energetic, eager to learn about rooftop farming, and has a great work ethic
  • Loves working outdoors in any weather
  • Can take direction and is a team player
  • Is organized, professional, and respectful
  • Is able to work independently and be very self-motivated
  • Is able to lift 50 lbs repeatedly, and to squat, kneel, bend over, and reach for extended periods of time

Nice To Haves

  • Valid driver's license a plus

Responsibilities

  • Undertake manual production work, including propagation, bed preparation, transplanting, hand-weeding, mulching, trellising, pruning, irrigation set-up and monitoring, pest and disease management, general plant care, etc.
  • Propagate, cultivate, and care for field crops under the supervision and guidance of farm managers
  • Harvests, wash, and store produce in accordance with food safety protocols and on-farm packing protocols.
  • Participate in larger annual plant care projects, such as pruning and mulching in our 40-tree food forest, farm winterization, and perennial cut-backs.
  • Keep the farm neat and organized, with an eye towards aesthetics and creating a welcoming, community oriented farm.
  • Maintain GAP and NY Grown and Certified food safety protocols are being followed and upheld.
