About The Position

General Summary We have part time Family Support Specialist positions available at the following Community Action Service Centers: St. Johns, MI, Charlotte, MI, Lansing/East Lansing, MI, Mason, MI, and Owosso, MI. Reporting to the Service Center Manager, provides family support services to individuals accessing services through the Service Center to promote individual and family independence. These positions focus on providing direct assistance to income eligible persons with emergency needs and requires the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with local service providers and with utility companies and other housing related organizations. Essential Functions Provides family support services including needs assessment, direct and referral services, advocacy, and follow up. May serve as receptionist for the assigned Service Center Assists clients with complexities related to emergency assistance, MI Bridges applications, and information/referral Provides clients with community resource information and how to access services for which they may be eligible. Links clients with service providers and other resources designed to meet individual needs and improve quality of life Assists in the selection of educational enrichment activities to comply with program requirements and promote independence and self sufficiency Enters client data in the empowOR database in compliance with contractual requirements and maintains up-to-date client records including assessment, direct and referral services, follow up, and other client contact Ensures confidentiality of all client files, records, and services provided Serves as a role model to guide others along the self sufficiency continuum; may provide financial counseling and/or basic budget workshops Works cooperatively with all staff and clients The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by a person in this position. Requirements

  • The job requires knowledge normally acquired by specialized training and/or classes in vocational trade or business school with course work in human or social services.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in delivery of direct and information/referral services to the low income community
  • Sensitivity to the needs of others with the ability to encourage and guide others working towards independence
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse population effectively
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills required

Responsibilities
