About The Position

This vacancy is for a GS - 0101 - 11, Family Resource Specialist located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, BASE KODIAK WORK-LIFE DIVISION -HW. The position is responsible for providing family support services as set forth in Commandant Instructions (COMSTINST) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). These services include but are not limited to the special needs program (SNP) and family support services. Typical work assignments include serving as a non-clinical case manager on issues pertaining to special needs conditions and SNP to Active Duty (AD) members, Activated Reservists, their family members and commands, maintaining and managing special needs case records, and providing information and referral guidance to Coast Guard personnel.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Must be registered or exempt from the Selective Service.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • Suitable for Federal employment determined by background investigation.
  • Selectee must provide a valid state driver's license and safe driving record.
  • Education: Degree in behavioral or social science or related disciplines appropriate to the position, or a combination of education and experience equivalent to a major in the field.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing standard operating procedures for family support services.
  • Experience conducting interviews to establish nature and extent of concerns and/or issues of serviced population.
  • Experience using various computer software databases, spreadsheets, word processing, and network programs.
  • Experience working in a social service delivery system applying policies, procedures and establishing agreements.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a non-clinical case manager on issues pertaining to special needs conditions and SNP to Active Duty members, Activated Reservists, their family members and commands.
  • Obtain completed designated forms from AD members and process for enrollment, disenrollment, or update of special needs status and provide appropriate case management.
  • Maintain and manage special needs case records for all AD members enrolling in the SNP.
  • Provide non-clinical case management of all SNP cases.
  • Create and maintain resource files (electronic and/or paper) containing relevant and current civilian and military resources.
  • Collaborate with Family Advocacy Specialists, Employee Assistance Program Coordinators, and other regional Health, Safety, and Work-Life specialists when working on cases crossing over different programs.
  • Provide information, referral, guidance, and support to Coast Guard personnel with adoption needs.
  • Provide information and referral to local childcare programs.
  • Provide information, referral, guidance and support to Coast Guard personnel and family members affected by a Mobilization and Deployment Operation.
  • Improve community awareness of current and future programs and services utilizing marketing and other publicity tools.
