About The Position

The Building Services 32BJ Benefit Funds (the Funds) is an umbrella organization responsible for administering Health, Pension, Retirement Savings, Training, and Legal Services benefits to over 185,000 SEIU 32BJ members. The Funds oversees and manages $11 billion in assets, requiring highly skilled financial management. They are committed to driving innovation, equity, and technology insights, utilizing cutting-edge technologies such as M365, Dynamics 365 CRM, Dynamics 365 F&O, Azure, AWS, SQL, Snowflake, and QlikView. The Family Paralegal position involves meeting with clients for preliminary assessments, conducting legal research, preparing and organizing various legal documents including petitions and affidavits, presenting case analyses to supervising attorneys, and coordinating legal strategy. The role also includes investigating facts, routing documents, maintaining client contact, monitoring legal and policy updates, filing legal documents with courts and agencies, updating case files, conducting public records research, providing self-help materials, confirming client eligibility, and managing client funds.

Requirements

  • Minimum one (1) year experience as a paralegal.
  • Familiarity with case management and document preparation software.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor, appearance, and workspace in representation of the Legal Services Fund.
  • Collaborate effectively in a team-oriented, high-volume work environment.
  • Communicate professionally with clients and colleagues across all levels and functions.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in family or matrimonial law strongly preferred.
  • Notary Public license preferred.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Meet with clients at initial intake to conduct preliminary assessment.
  • Conduct legal research in substantive and procedural law.
  • Prepare, review, and organize legal documents, including petitions, affidavits of service, statements of net worth, witness affidavits, child support worksheets, and responsive pleadings; present case analyses to supervising attorneys.
  • Coordinate with attorneys post-intake to plan legal strategy and review case progress.
  • Investigate facts and law of case to determine course of action.
  • Route documents and correspondence efficiently within and between departments.
  • Maintain regular client contact to collect information, provide updates, and support direct communication with relevant third parties.
  • Monitor legal and policy updates to ensure accuracy in document preparation.
  • File legal documents with courts and agencies in accordance with attorney instruction.
  • Maintain and update individual case files with complete and accurate documentation.
  • Conduct research using public records at court clerk offices and administrative agencies.
  • Provide clients with self-help materials and guidance as appropriate.
  • Review prior and current Legal Fund cases to confirm client eligibility and plan coverage.
  • Collect, track, and account for client funds in coordination with the legal team and in accordance with Fund procedures.
