Failure Analysis Engineer, Energy Products
About The Position
The Failure Analysis Team’s mission is to determine root cause and contributing factors to improve the experience of Tesla’s Energy Products by reducing field issues, in collaboration with a large cross-section of other engineering teams. Engineers and Technicians on the team are responsible for a wide variety of Energy Product systems like Powerwall, Megapack and Supercharger. This is an individual contributor role with great internal visibility that requires extensive, hands-on work focused on failure analysis and root cause activities. We are seeking a multi-faceted individual who will be responsible for all aspects of identifying, analyzing, root causing, implementing countermeasures, and reporting on issues effecting systems including electromechanical, low voltage, and battery systems among others. To be effective in this role, the engineer will need to be intimately familiar with the detailed behavior of these electro-mechanical components and the tools and equipment used in their design and manufacture. You will work with other Engineering teams to root cause and implement countermeasures of field issues to improve quality, reliability, and durability of the products. Requirements
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering or equivalent, or equivalent experience
- Strong demonstrable experience in electromechanical hardware applications for energy storage/automotive applications
- Strong demonstrable hands-on experience in lab settings, including designing, assembling, and executing tests for system-level hardware issues
- Extremely proficient at interpreting system diagrams and wiring schematics
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
Nice To Haves
- Mechanical Design experience of thermal systems is a strong plus
- Experience with fabrication, assembly, and basic instrumentation is desirable
- Familiarity with pressure/leak testing, CAN communication software (PCAN Explorer/CANape), and accelerated life testing
- Familiarity with or willingness to learn the different failure analysis techniques including 2D and 3D X-Ray, Cross Sectioning, FTIR, DSC, SEM, and FLIR Thermography
Responsibilities
- Drive issue resolution from root cause analysis to countermeasure implementation on electromechanical and thermal systems hardware failures from Tesla’s Energy Products
- Investigate system assemblies, modules, and components to identify root cause of failure in Tesla’s Energy products
- Design and conduct fault replication testing and experiments on electromechanical components such as motors, actuators, pumps, etc.
- Collaborate with appropriate engineers, suppliers, and contract manufacturers to drive resolution to the identified failure causes
- Provide input to design and manufacturing teams to improve design and production yield
- Support design reviews and DFMEAs based on prior failure experience
- Candidate should be detail oriented and possess excellent communication skills
