About The Position

Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community who in partnership with families, provides an equitable and exemplary education in a nurturing, engaging, and challenging environment to ensure our students achieve personal excellence and become lifelong learners. Afterschool sports coaches work with students with deaf and hard of hearing students by coaching, mentoring, and developing student-athletes in both the fundamentals and advanced skills of their respective sport, while promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline, and academic success. The coach is responsible for planning and conducting practices, supervising student-athletes during athletic activities, ensuring safety and compliance with school and league regulations, and fostering a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment that encourages personal growth and team achievement.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Knowledge of deaf and hard-of-hearing students and the ability to teach students on different levels, with varying educational backgrounds.
  • Strong communication skills are mandatory, therefore proficiency in American Sign Language is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Coaching experience and knowledge of Deaf Community preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coaches are responsible for the day-to-day operation of the program and other program related duties.
  • These duties can range from drill instruction and execution to video study and analysis.
  • Coaches are expected to demonstrate effective teaching skills relative to sport-specific technique, as well as possess the interpersonal skills necessary to maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, other coaches, and administrators.
  • Essential responsibilities also include modeling appropriate behavior and following established protocol for injuries.
  • This position will report to the Athletic Director and/or Assistant Athletic Director.

Benefits

  • Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.
  • As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled.
  • The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits.
  • You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
  • Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
