The Laboratory Coordinator will contribute to teaching, service and research activities in support of the mission of the Biology Department. Responsibilities will also include curriculum development for the department in the areas as needed. ESSENTIAL DUTIES : Maintain a professional schedule that includes 18 contact hours teaching Lab per semester (six 3 hour laboratories, approximately 100 students per semester). Update and edit laboratory assignments, procedures, syllabi and exams for the General Biology Laboratory courses. Maintain the course Blackboard site which serves as an electronic laboratory textbook. Students are required to access the site for all course documents. Coordinate purchase of course supplies with Lab Prep position. Supervise preparation of course materials on a weekly basis by Lab Prep position. Recruit and train volunteer teaching assistants on the teaching methods and laboratory techniques used in the laboratory courses. Mentoring of undergraduate research projects (Independent Study and Honors Research): Conduct interdisciplinary research program including experimental design, data collection and analysis, development of grant proposals and publications with undergraduate students. Serve as faculty advisor for undergraduate students in Biology and Environmental Science/Studies. Work with the Chair of Biology on course development. Curriculum development for Field Studies and non-majors courses. Consultant in the scouting and selection of locations for future Field Studies courses. Assist with planning and logistics of Field Studies field trips. Assist in recruitment and interview/screening process for Field Studies courses. Maintain a regular schedule of office hours. Participate with faculty in the Biology Department in general administration of the department. Participate in recruitment events including open houses and NUSTEP campus visits. Serve on departmental committees including honors thesis committees. Write letters of recommendation for students applying to graduate and professional schools, and scholarships. Volunteer at local schools assisting teachers to enhance science learning opportunities for their students. Attend department, college and university events as required including attendance at undergraduate research conferences, undergraduate commencement, Arts and Sciences Day of Recognition, and Biology Club and Honor Society events. Maintain confidentiality of information (including but not limited to: student and employee personal information, student grades, etc.), both during and after their employment with the University. Any question regarding the confidentiality of material, should be referred to the supervisor. Any violation shall subject the employee to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment. Perform other duties as assigned.
